The Leganés City Council will allocate €473,000 this year to the Basic Material Assistance programme, which has already helped over 225 families with children. The amount has increased by 57% compared to 2024.
The Leganés City Council has expanded the budget for this year’s Basic Material Assistance programme of the Community of Madrid to €473,000, a 57% increase from the €300,000 invested in 2024. Thanks to this increase, more than 225 families with children have been able to purchase food and hygiene products using prepaid cards.
The programme, co-financed 90% by the European Social Fund Plus (2021-2027), aims to address material deprivation among the most vulnerable individuals. The cards can be redeemed at designated locations and allow the purchase of food, including fresh products, as well as hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and baby diapers.
Professionals from the Leganés Social Services Delegation conduct an assessment of each application, evaluate the suitability of participants, and verify that they meet the access requirements. They then refer cases to the General Directorate of Social Services and Integration of the Community of Madrid, which is responsible for the programme.
The Councillor for Social Services and Family, Jesús Rodríguez, highlighted that “the effectiveness of the assessments conducted by the Social Services professionals at the Leganés City Council, who are responsible for referring participants, has allowed us to reach more families with children to be part of this programme that we develop alongside the Community of Madrid.”
Beneficiaries must be registered in Leganés, be of legal age—except for emancipated minors—and be part of a family unit with at least one child. Additionally, the income per consumption unit must be below 48% of the national average income.
Interested individuals can request an appointment with the social workers of the Leganés City Council either in person at the Juan Muñoz, Ramiro de Maeztu, and La Fortuna attention centres, or via email at uaserviciossociales@leganes.org.
The programme also includes social accompaniment measures, such as information on available resources, referrals to educational and health services, and activities aimed at social or labour integration. Each participant receives at least one of these measures, tailored to their needs.
