Teatro La Latina celebrates the 130th anniversary of La Revoltosa with a new production by L'Operamore within its 'Zarzuela en la Latina' cycle. The work, considered one of the pinnacles of the género chico, will be shown from August 5 to 9 at 20:00 hours.
The lyrical farce, with a libretto by José López Silva and Carlos Fernández Shaw and music by Ruperto Chapí, premiered on November 25, 1897, at the Apolo Theatre in Madrid. Since then, it has become a fundamental piece of Spanish zarzuela, alongside titles such as La verbena de la Paloma.
The plot unfolds in a Madrid corrala, where the flirtatious and cheerful Mari Pepa awakens jealousy and gossip. Felipe, in love with her, struggles between pride and passion while the neighbours plot a trick to teach everyone a lesson. The work humorously and tenderly portrays the popular life of late 19th-century Madrid.
The performance lasts approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes, with no intermission. Shows take place from Wednesday to Saturday at 20:00 hours and on Sundays at 19:00 hours.
The 'Zarzuela en la Latina' cycle offers a continuous programme this summer that recovers the Castilian memory of Madrid, coinciding with the festivities of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and La Paloma. In addition to La Revoltosa, the audience will be able to enjoy other titles such as La verbena de la Paloma, El barberillo de Lavapiés, Luisa Fernanda, La tabernera del puerto, and La Traviata.
