Teatro La Latina hosts 'La Revoltosa' from August 5, one of the pinnacle works of the género chico, as part of the 'Zarzuela en La Latina' cycle featuring seven classic titles.

Teatro La Latina celebrates the 130th anniversary of La Revoltosa with its inclusion in the 'Zarzuela en La Latina' cycle, which starts on July 22 and runs until September 6. The work, premiered on November 25, 1897, at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, is a lyrical farce in one act with a libretto by José López Silva and Carlos Fernández Shaw and music by Ruperto Chapí.

The production is by L'Operamore, which once again turns the theatre in the La Latina neighbourhood into the epicentre of lyrical performances in Madrid during the summer. The cycle includes seven titles from the Spanish repertoire, with a special focus on the género chico and the grand zarzuela, concluding with Verdi's opera La Traviata.

The plot of La Revoltosa unfolds in a communal courtyard, where Mari Pepa, flirtatious and cheerful, stirs jealousy and gossip. Felipe, in love with her, struggles between pride and passion, while the neighbours, fed up with their husbands flirting with Mari Pepa, plot a trick to teach everyone a lesson. It is one of the pinnacle works of the género chico, alongside La verbena de la Paloma.

Performances of La Revoltosa will take place from August 5 to 9, with an approximate duration of 1 hour and 25 minutes without an intermission. The cycle is completed with La canción del olvido (from July 22 to 26), La Gran Vía (from July 29 to August 2), La verbena de la Paloma (from August 12 to 16), El barberillo de Lavapiés (from August 19 to 23), Luisa Fernanda (from August 26 to 30), and La tabernera del puerto (from September 2 to 4).

The cycle coincides with the festivities of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and La Paloma, offering an opportunity to enjoy Madrid's zarzuela at affordable prices. Performances are from Wednesday to Saturday at 20:00 and on Sundays at 19:00. Tickets and subscriptions are available on the Teatro La Latina website.
