The Community of Madrid has invested 9.6 million euros in 29 projects to improve accessibility in public educational centres across the region during the 2025/26 school year. The works aim to eliminate architectural barriers and promote the autonomy of students with reduced mobility.
The Deputy Minister of Educational Policy and Organisation, José Carlos Fernández, visited the IES Carlos III on Thursday, in the San Blas-Canillejas district, where the regional government has allocated over one million euros to adapt access, install lifting systems, and reconfigure common areas.
These improvements are part of a continued investment plan that the regional government is developing in schools to ensure equal opportunities in accessing classrooms. Accessibility is already a requirement included in all newly constructed educational centres.
The work at IES Carlos III will directly benefit students and families in the district, who will find it easier to navigate the building and use the common facilities. The centre, located on Calle de los Arcos, serves secondary and baccalaureate students.
The regional plan complements other previous initiatives to adapt school infrastructures, which in recent years have prioritised the removal of steps, the widening of doors, and the installation of lifts and ramps. Most of the works are carried out during non-school periods to avoid interfering with academic activities.
This year's investment reinforces the Community of Madrid's commitment to inclusive education, a goal that also applies to adapted transport programmes and resources to support functional diversity in classrooms.
