Madrid City Council enhances street cleaning with over 400 workers and 166 mechanical means during San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and La Paloma in the Embajadores and La Latina districts.
The Madrid City Council has activated a special street cleaning operation to tackle the August festivities, which began on August 4 and will last until the 17th. The operation, coordinated by the Urgent Cleaning Service (Selur) and the street cleaning brigades, mobilises over 400 workers and 166 mechanical means in the Embajadores and La Latina districts, the areas with the highest concentration of activities and crowds during these celebrations.
The deployment has been designed in phases to cover each of the three festivities. The first phase, corresponding to the San Cayetano festivities, which conclude this Friday, has concentrated its efforts in the Plaza de Cascorro, Plaza del General Vara del Rey, Embajadores, and Ribera de Curtidores. For these days, 110 workers and 48 mechanical means have been assigned, along with the installation of 40 litter bins, seven portable toilets – two of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility – and 75 containers of 800 litres for waste management.
The next reinforcement will arrive with the San Lorenzo festivities, which will be held from August 8 to 11. The work will focus on Plaza de Arturo Barea, Calle Argumosa, Plaza de la Corrala, Plaza de Nelson Mandela, and Plaza de Lavapiés. On this occasion, the City Council will mobilise 122 workers and 45 mechanical means, along with 70 litter bins, eight portable toilets (two adapted), and 64 containers of 800 litres.
The largest deployment will correspond to the Virgen de La Paloma festivities, from August 13 to 17, when the operation will extend to locations such as Las Vistillas, Plaza de la Paja, Plaza de los Carros, Plaza de la Cebada, Plaza de Puerta de Moros, Calle Calatrava, Gran Vía de San Francisco, Plaza de la Paloma, Calle de la Cebada, and Calle de Las Tabernillas. For these dates, 193 workers and 73 mechanical means have been planned, as well as 63 litter bins, eight portable toilets (two accessible), and 100 containers of 800 litres.
The operation, according to the City Council, aims to minimise the impact of crowds in public spaces and ensure that the streets in the centre return to their normal state as soon as possible. Residents and visitors in these districts will see a constant presence of cleaning staff during the festive days, with special attention to the points where the booths are set up and where attendees gather.
The municipal forecast is that the operation will remain active throughout the festivities, with occasional reinforcements depending on the needs identified by the technical services. After the last day of La Paloma, the brigades will carry out intensive cleaning of the affected areas to restore normality to the Centro district.
