The Governing Council has approved the creation of a body that will coordinate aid and recovery for the municipalities affected by the fires at the end of July.
The Community of Madrid has launched the Interdepartmental Commission for the Reconstruction of the Sierra Oeste, a body aimed at coordinating actions and aid for the municipalities affected by the fires. The agreement was approved in the extraordinary Governing Council on July 29 and was published this Monday in the Official Bulletin of the Community of Madrid (BOCM).
The main mission of the new body will be to develop the Recovery Plan for the area, articulating support measures among all the departments of the regional government. The aim is to ensure a comprehensive response that contributes to the restoration of the most affected localities and the return to normality.
According to the text, the fires have caused significant damage to homes, facilities, and livestock operations, in addition to affecting economic activities such as agriculture, livestock farming, construction, and transport. The regional government is already deploying various initiatives to repair the infrastructure and restore the affected public services.
The commission will be chaired by the Minister of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín. It will also include the deputy ministers and the technical general secretaries of all departments, as well as the General Secretariat of the Governing Council.
Among its functions are the collection and coordination of proposals from the different departments, the definition of new aid measures, the monitoring of their execution, and the evaluation of compliance with the planned actions for the reconstruction of the Sierra Oeste.
The commission will meet weekly and whenever called by its president or requested by at least one third of its members. Additionally, it may establish sectoral working groups and invite experts and technical officials when the nature of the issues requires it.
Its initial duration will be one year, extendable for another year, although it will be dissolved once the work is completed and the objectives for which it was created are achieved. Its operation will not imply an increase in public spending and its members will not receive any remuneration for performing these functions.
This commission is one of the first substantial institutional responses for the residents of the Sierra Oeste, who are still facing the consequences of the fires. The weekly frequency of the meetings aims to expedite decision-making and ensure that aid reaches the affected areas as soon as possible.
