The Alcobendas City Council has begun renovation works on Constitución Street, with an investment of 1,065,592 euros and a timeframe of six months.

Machines are already at work on Constitución Street in Alcobendas. The City Council has started the transformation of the section between Primero de Mayo Street and Avenida de España, an initiative aimed at improving accessibility and completely renewing the urban environment.

The mayor, Rocío García Alcántara, visited the start of the works accompanied by the councillors for Works and the Central District. The works will be carried out in a first phase between Manuel Gómez Oria and Primero de Mayo Streets.

Wider sidewalks and barrier-free access

One of the main objectives is to facilitate mobility for all pedestrians, especially those with reduced mobility. To achieve this, sidewalks will be widened and architectural barriers will be removed.

The pavement of both the sidewalks and the roadway will be completely renewed over an area of nearly 5,000 square metres. Additionally, access to several buildings will be adapted to create a continuous and safe pedestrian route.

Residents of the Central District will notice a significant change in their daily lives: they will be able to walk down the street without obstacles and with greater comfort, something that was not possible in some sections until now.

Improved road safety and reorganised parking

The project also includes measures to enhance traffic flow and safety. New pedestrian crossings will be built on a single platform, a solution that eliminates the height difference between the sidewalk and the roadway, forcing vehicles to reduce speed.

Signage will be completely renewed and parking spaces will be reorganised. The new reverse angled parking system facilitates loading and unloading from the sidewalk and reduces risks during manoeuvres when leaving.

Drivers parking in the area will need to adapt to this new layout, which increases safety but requires a bit of practice at first.

LED lighting and more green spaces

Sustainability is another cornerstone of the renovation. Low-energy LED lighting and an intelligent irrigation management system will be installed to optimise water use.

The street will feature new urban furniture: benches, bins, and planters. Additionally, new trees will be planted to increase the presence of green spaces in this area of the Central District.

Residents will be able to enjoy a more pleasant and cooler environment, especially in summer when the shade from the trees is appreciated. However, they will have to wait for the trees to grow to notice the change.

Modernisation of sanitation and six months of works

The intervention will also modernise part of the sanitation network. The most deteriorated sections of the collector will be replaced, and the rest will be rehabilitated using cured-in-place pipe lining, a technique that reduces the impact of the works by avoiding large trenches.

The works have been awarded to the company ACSA, Obras e Infraestructuras S.A.U., and will last approximately six months. The City Council has planned the schedule to begin in summer, aiming to minimise traffic disruption and reduce inconvenience to residents and businesses.

During this time, residents and shopkeepers on Constitución Street will have to coexist with the works, but the outcome promises a more modern, accessible, and sustainable thoroughfare. The works are expected to be completed by early 2027.
