The comprehensive renovation works of Constitución Street, the main commercial avenue of Alcobendas, have begun with an investment of over a million euros. The project will improve accessibility and create shaded areas.

Constitución Street in Alcobendas, the commercial axis of the Central district, has started to transform. The City Council has launched the comprehensive renovation works of this street, which has been awaiting a thorough renewal for years. The works, with a budget exceeding one million euros, focus on creating space for pedestrians, improving accessibility, and renewing urban furniture.

A first phase between Manuel Gómez Oria and Primero de Mayo

The work has begun on the section between Manuel Gómez Oria Street and Primero de Mayo Street, covering about 5,000 square meters. The mayor, Rocío García Alcántara, visited the works accompanied by councillors Jesús Montero (Works) and Félix Casanova (Central District). García Alcántara highlighted that Constitución Street “has been waiting too many years for a transformation of this magnitude,” and that the renovation will provide “greater accessibility, wider sidewalks, and a more pleasant and green environment.”

The project opts for a single platform to ensure optimal accessibility, eliminating architectural barriers and facilitating the movement of people with reduced mobility. Additionally, specific shaded areas will be installed, a much-anticipated relief during the hot months.

Asphalt instead of cobblestones to withstand truck traffic

One of the novelties compared to the previous renovation —the first section of the street, carried out during the mandate of PSOE and Ciudadanos— is that the roadway will be made of asphalt rather than cobblestones. The councillor for Works, Jesús Montero, explained that the cobblestones did not withstand the passage of delivery trucks well, something common on a commercial street. “This time we opted for a more durable and functional surface,” he stated.

The roadway will have a single lane instead of the current two, and parking spaces will be reorganised in inverted fishbone, a system that optimises space and improves road safety. Access to some doorways will also be improved to ensure an accessible pedestrian route throughout the section.

More trees, LED lighting, and new furniture

The renovation plan includes the planting of around thirty trees in a street that currently lacks them. New zebra crossings will be installed in areas with a single platform, lighting will be replaced with LED, and an intelligent irrigation management system will be implemented to reduce water consumption. Urban furniture will also be renewed with new bins and benches.

Moreover, a complete renewal of the sewage network will be undertaken, replacing some sections of the collector that show significant damage. The works, awarded to the company ACSA, will last for six months. The summer start aims to minimise inconvenience to merchants and residents, as traffic and public attendance are lower during this time.

For the residents and merchants in the area, the renovation will mean a notable change in their daily lives. Over the coming months, they will have to cope with traffic cuts and diversions, but the result promises a friendlier street, with wide sidewalks, shade, and a green environment that invites strolling and shopping at local businesses. The mayor has assured that continuous monitoring of the works will be carried out to resolve any incidents as quickly as possible.
