The Community of Madrid will build a 110-metre ramp and a second concourse at the Metro Estadio Metropolitano station (Line 7) to improve mobility on match days and during major events. The investment amounts to €9.7 million.
The Community of Madrid has greenlit the proposal for the awarding of works to construct a new access at the Metro Estadio Metropolitano station on Line 7, aimed at alleviating congestion at entry and exit points during Atlético de Madrid matches and other major events. The project, budgeted at €9.7 million, will have an execution period of 12 months.
The main action consists of installing a 110-metre long and six-metre wide access ramp, which will connect the street directly to the station's concourse. This infrastructure will help reduce the congestion that occurs on the fixed stairs, especially during peak times. The ramp will feature a landscaped area in its central part, lighting along the entire route, and a drainage system for rainwater collection.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of a second concourse of 1,254 square metres, equipped with 26 control points, eight escalators, and five lifts that will connect directly with the platforms. This infrastructure will enhance accessibility for all users, particularly for people with reduced mobility, and will strengthen the operational capacity of the station.
The Metro Estadio Metropolitano station experiences peaks of up to 18,000 users during football matches or concerts. With this expansion, it is expected to increase its capacity for the entry and exit of passengers, reduce waiting times, and improve the management of passenger flows. The work has also been designed in coordination with the development of the future Sports City, currently under construction near the stadium, to integrate the pedestrian routes of this new complex with the accesses to Riyadh Air Metropolitano and the Metro network.
The Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, has highlighted that this intervention "will improve the experience of travellers and facilitate mobility at one of the nerve centres of Madrid's public transport." The works add to other investments made in recent years at the station, which was already renovated for the inauguration of the stadium in 2017.
For local residents, especially those living in the Rosas neighbourhood and the San Blas-Canillejas district, the improvement will mean a reduction in the disturbances caused by congestion on event days, as pedestrian flows will be better channelled. Furthermore, the new connection with the Sports City will facilitate access to the sports and leisure facilities being built in the area.
The project will be financed through the budgets of the Community of Madrid and it is expected that the works will begin in the coming months, once the awarding is formalised. During the construction period, necessary diversions and safety measures will be established to minimise the impact on Metro users.
This action is part of the Community of Madrid's plan to modernise the Metro network and adapt it to the needs of a constantly growing city. In recent years, improvements have been made at stations such as Nuevos Ministerios, Sol, and Avenida de América, with new interventions planned for other lines.
