The Madrid cultural space has unveiled its programming for the coming months, featuring annual events such as the L.E.V. Matadero festival and Animario, alongside an exhibition by Carlos Aires and a cycle dedicated to choreographer Damien Jalet.
Matadero Madrid, the contemporary creation centre of the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the City Council, is ready with the programming that will open the autumn season. Starting in September, the venue of the old cold storage will once again be filled with proposals ranging from visual electronics to dance, literature, and the plastic arts.
Among the most notable events is the return of the L.E.V. Matadero festival, dedicated to visual electronics and extended realities, which will celebrate its eighth edition from September 17 to 20. Organised by Matadero and curated by the Datatron platform, the event has established itself as a reference in exploring the links between art, science, and technology. The programme will include concerts, audiovisual performances, installations, and immersive experiences. As a prelude, from September 16 to 18, the XR Camp will take place, a professional meeting framed within the European network RIT: Realities in Transition.
Another highlight will be the exhibition 'Bailad, bailad, malditos' by artist Carlos Aires, which will occupy Nave 0 from September 11 to January 24. The show, part of the 'Abierto x Obras' programme, is a site-specific installation that transforms the space — an old cold storage room that suffered a fire — into a propped-up dance floor. As the artist himself has explained, the piece aims to generate a contrast between euphoria and unease, combining over a hundred props and twenty screens. It is Aires' first solo exhibition in a public institution in Madrid.
In the field of dance, Cineteca Madrid and Centro Danza Matadero have organised a cycle dedicated to the Franco-Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet, known as 'the choreographer of the stars'. From September 5 to 12, a selection of his audiovisual works will be screened, including music videos and film excerpts. Jalet has collaborated with Madonna on her 'The Celebration Tour' and in 'Confessions II', and was the choreographer for the film 'Emilia Pérez' by Jacques Audiard. Additionally, on September 12, he will conduct a practical dance workshop open to dancers, choreographers, and filmmakers.
Literature will also have its space with the Back to the Book festival, which will take place from September 11 to 13 at Matadero and Casa del Lector. This year, the independent literature and publishing festival will feature singer and writer Julieta Venegas, who will present her first novel, 'Norteña'.
The Medialab programme will kick off the season with the collaborative research laboratory LAB 5, titled 'The Mechanics of Truth', which addresses the technological production of the real. Meanwhile, Intermediae will launch the three projects selected in the second edition of the Intermediae Distributed call. The Centre for Artistic Residencies (CRA) will welcome new resident artists, and on November 21, it will open its doors to the public to showcase the work of the creators.
For children, Matadero has prepared spaces and activities that promote collective creation and manual work, designed for families to explore together.
