The Town Hall of Torrejón de Ardoz has reinforced rat and insect control treatments following residents' complaints. The mayor and the Environment councillor have supervised the work on the ground.
The Town Hall of Torrejón de Ardoz has launched an extraordinary pest control operation to tackle the proliferation of rats, cockroaches, and other insects, which has been exacerbated by the high summer temperatures. Mayor Alejandro Navarro Prieto and Environment councillor Esperanza Fernández de Mesa supervised the work in several neighbourhoods of the city on Wednesday, after residents conveyed their complaints to the City Council.
Navarro Prieto explained that the aim is to “maintain Torrejón de Ardoz in the best sanitary conditions” and assured that the local government listens to citizens and acts when incidents are detected. “We reinforce treatments where necessary,” the mayor emphasised during the visit, where he was able to see the progress of the actions in the most affected areas.
Pest control efforts are not new in the municipality. The Town Hall maintains a permanent programme of monitoring, prevention, and treatment in public spaces and the sewage network throughout the year. However, with the arrival of heat, these efforts intensify, as high temperatures favour the reproduction of these animals.
Environment councillor Esperanza Fernández de Mesa reminded that municipal competence is limited to public spaces, so she called for the collaboration of residents and property communities. “It is essential that they also carry out the preventive and control actions that correspond to them in entrances, patios, garages, premises, and homes. Only with everyone's collaboration will we achieve more effective measures,” she pointed out.
The Town Hall has set up several channels for residents to report incidents or request intensified work in a specific area. The City Council assures that the monitoring, prevention, and action plan will continue over the coming weeks, with reinforced interventions in areas where necessary. The high temperatures, which have recently exceeded 35 degrees in the area, have triggered alerts for the appearance of these insects and rodents, something common in many cities during the summer.
The visit of the mayor and the councillor is part of the local government's policy of proximity, which seeks to provide a quick and effective response to incidents affecting the well-being of the residents of Torrejón. In this regard, Navarro Prieto highlighted that “from the Town Hall, we listen to residents and act when incidents are detected.”
For residents, the measure is a relief, as complaints had multiplied in recent weeks on social media and through municipal channels. Some residents reported the presence of rats in parks and bins, as well as cockroaches on the pavements at night. With this reinforcement, the Town Hall hopes to reduce the population of these pests and prevent public health issues.
Authorities remind that, in addition to chemical treatments, it is important to maintain cleanliness in the streets and not leave organic waste outside bins, as this attracts animals. They also recommend sealing possible entry points in buildings, such as cracks or gaps in facades.
The Town Hall of Torrejón de Ardoz will continue to inform residents about the areas and timings of the treatments, so they can take precautions and avoid contact with the products used. Citizen collaboration, they insist, is key to the success of the campaign.
