Facundo, 37, was found dead in his flat in the Las Tablas neighbourhood with 12 stab wounds. The attacker fled and police are investigating the building's cameras.
Cirauqui street, in the Las Tablas neighbourhood, woke up in shock this Tuesday. Around 10 in the morning, neighbours alerted 112 about a strong chemical smell coming from a flat. Upon arrival, firefighters had to enter through a window and found the lifeless body of Facundo, a 37-year-old IT worker, with 12 stab wounds to the chest.
Emergency services from Samur-Protección Civil attempted to revive him, but it was too late. The victim was in cardiac arrest. On the floor, next to the body, officers found a bloodied kitchen knife about 20 centimetres long. The attacker had fled before the police arrived.
An exemplary neighbour with no criminal record
Facundo worked as an IT professional and, according to testimonies gathered from residents, he was a quiet man with no criminal record who had never caused any trouble. “We heard him calling for help early in the morning,” some neighbours told investigators. No one can imagine what could have triggered such extreme violence.
The building where the incident occurred has security cameras in common areas, which could be key to identifying the murderer. The Scientific Police and the Homicide Group V of the Superior Police Headquarters of Madrid are in charge of the investigation. So far, there have been no arrests.
The firefighters' access and eye irritation
The firefighters of Madrid had to force entry through a window because the door was locked from the inside. Upon entering, they noticed an intense itching in their eyes, which led officers to suspect that the attacker might have used pepper spray or some irritant spray to immobilise the victim. This hypothesis is being examined by forensic experts.
The body was transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute for an autopsy, which will determine the exact time of death and confirm the number of wounds. Neighbours in the area, a middle to upper-class residential zone north of the capital, have expressed their shock. “This never happens here,” commented one neighbour, still visibly affected.
The investigation remains open
The National Police have established a search operation for the attacker, who may have left the area on foot or by vehicle. Traffic camera recordings from the surrounding area are being reviewed. So far, no line of inquiry has been ruled out: neither a settling of scores, nor a robbery gone wrong, nor a passionate attack.
Officers have taken statements from several neighbours and the building's doorman, who confirmed that the knife found did not belong to the victim. “I had never seen it before,” he stated. The homeowners' association has called an extraordinary meeting to discuss additional security measures.
For the residents of Las Tablas, the day has been a blow. The tranquillity of the neighbourhood has been shattered abruptly. While children play in the communal pools, adults barely exchange incredulous glances. The police are asking anyone with information to contact 091.
