Pozuelo de Alarcón becomes the first municipality in the Community of Madrid to have Bicimad outside the capital. The service starts this Tuesday with 300 electric bikes spread across 30 stations.

The public bike network of Madrid crosses the boundaries of the capital for the first time. This Tuesday, the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the Mayor of Pozuelo, Paloma Tejero, inaugurated the expansion of the Bicimad service to Pozuelo de Alarcón, with 300 electric bikes and 30 stations.

The investment, entirely covered by the Pozuelo City Council, amounts to 2.32 million euros. The Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT Madrid) provides technological support and technical consultancy, while maintenance is the responsibility of the municipality.

Same app, same use

Almeida explained that the Bicimad app is the same in Pozuelo as in Madrid: “it will be used in the same way, bikes can be docked exactly the same.” Users will be able to leave the bike at any station in both municipalities at no additional cost.

The stations have been located following criteria similar to those in the capital: proximity to public spaces, connection with other transport, closeness to cycling paths, and avoiding the removal of parking spaces. Notable locations include the Pozuelo train station, the shopping centre, and the municipal sports centre.

First municipality in the region

Paloma Tejero described the day as “very important for Pozuelo”, as it becomes the first municipality in the Community of Madrid to join Bicimad. The mayor noted that there is “a lot of anticipation, especially among our youth”, and called for responsible use and respect for traffic rules.

For his part, Almeida confirmed that there are “talks” with other neighbouring municipalities to replicate the model, although there are no formal discussions. The expansion strengthens the Bicimad network, which now has 683 stations and 8,385 bikes across the region.

Record number of trips

The service has broken usage records: in 2025, 13.7 million trips were recorded, and so far in 2026, there have already been over 8 million. The connection with Pozuelo will allow residents to travel to Madrid via Casa de Campo, as Almeida highlighted: “What greater wonder than being able to cycle to Madrid?”.

Since late 2025, the network has been strengthened in six districts of the capital (Barajas, Hortaleza, Moncloa-Aravaca, Puente de Vallecas, Vicálvaro, and Villaverde) with 20 new stations. With the arrival in Pozuelo, Bicimad consolidates its role as a sustainable mobility alternative beyond the M-30.

Those interested can download the Bicimad app and register. The rates are the same as in Madrid: an annual subscription of 25 euros or a flat rate of 10 euros per month. The first trips are free during the first hour.
