The Galapagar Town Hall has completed the installation of 300 m² of textile canopies in the park on Avenida Víctimas del Terrorismo, one of the most used children's areas in the municipality. The investment exceeds €87,000.
The children's park on Avenida Víctimas del Terrorismo in Galapagar now features nearly 300 square meters of artificial shade. The Town Hall has finished installing tensioned textile canopies that cover the play and relaxation areas, aiming to make the use of this space more bearable during the summer months.
This project, which has involved an investment of over €87,000, responds to a recurring demand from families in the municipality. According to municipal sources, the lack of natural shade made it difficult to enjoy this park on hot days, prompting the Town Hall to seek a structural solution.
The canopies are made of polyester coated with PVC, a weather-resistant and durable material. They have been arranged in several triangular sections, supported by twelve tubular pillars anchored to concrete footings. The varying heights and slight curvature allow for rainwater drainage without invading the safety zones of the play equipment.
The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Paloma Lorenzo, has highlighted that this intervention "significantly improves the comfort for families" and that the Town Hall is already studying the possibility of extending the initiative to other children's parks in Galapagar. The priority, she explained, will be those spaces with higher user traffic and less vegetation cover.
With this measure, the Town Hall continues its plan to modernise municipal play areas, adapting them to the needs of residents and encouraging their use for more hours a day, even during peak summer temperatures.
The installation of shade in the park on Avenida Víctimas del Terrorismo is one of the most requested actions by families in recent years. In previous summers, many parents chose to avoid this park during the hottest parts of the day due to direct sun exposure. Now, the canopies allow children to play with greater safety and thermal comfort.
The Town Hall reminds that the maintenance of these canopies will be managed by municipal services, which will conduct regular inspections to ensure their proper condition. Additionally, they have been installed with an anchoring system that allows for disassembly if necessary, for example, in adverse weather conditions.
Galapagar has more than a dozen children's parks distributed throughout the municipality. The Parks and Gardens Department plans to conduct a shade study in the remaining play areas to determine which ones require a similar intervention. Among the candidates are the parks in the Los Ranchos urbanisation and the one on Calle Real, although there are no specific dates for their execution.
The investment of €87,000 has been financed from the municipal budget for 2026, within the allocation for the improvement of public spaces. The Town Hall assures that this action has not resulted in an increase in municipal debt, as it has been executed with its own funds.
Residents around the park have positively evaluated the installation. Some parents consulted indicate that they can now take their children in the late morning without worrying about sun exposure, which expands the options for children's leisure in the municipality.
With this initiative, Galapagar joins other municipalities in the Community of Madrid that have opted for the installation of artificial shade in children's parks, a growing trend in response to rising summer temperatures. The Town Hall does not rule out incorporating misting systems or water features in the future to further enhance comfort on very hot days.
