Wildfires in the Sierra Oeste have caused a deterioration in air quality in Galapagar. The Town Hall reminds residents that smart cabins allow real-time consultation of particles, temperature, and other parameters.
The presence of smoke and ash from the severe wildfires affecting the Sierra Oeste has forced health authorities to recommend avoiding outdoor activities in Galapagar, especially among the most vulnerable populations. In light of this situation, the Town Hall has focused on the Galapagar Environmental Stations Network, a public tool that allows residents to check the evolution of air quality in real time.
The smart cabins CabinPaq, distributed at strategic points in the municipality such as Parquelagos, La Navata, Escorial Street, Pedriza Street, or Victims of Terrorism Avenue, function as environmental stations that continuously record different indicators. The data is automatically updated and can be accessed from any device without the need for registration, through easily interpretable graphs.
Among the parameters that can be monitored are the concentration of suspended particles PM2.5 and PM10, temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and precipitation. Additionally, the platform allows users to check the evolution of these values over the past hours and days, which is particularly useful during extraordinary episodes such as wildfires, heatwaves, or adverse weather phenomena.
The Councillor for the Environment, Paloma Lorenzo, has stated that "episodes like those experienced in recent days demonstrate the importance of having real-time environmental information. Thanks to this network, any resident can know the state of air quality in the municipality and follow the evolution of different parameters to take necessary precautions when circumstances advise it."
The publication of this data has been made possible by leveraging the existing infrastructure of the smart cabins, at no additional cost to municipal finances and through the development carried out by the Town Hall's technical services. The Galapagar Environmental Stations Network is available on the municipal Transparency Portal, reinforcing the Town Hall's commitment to transparency, innovation, and citizens' access to useful information for the protection of their health and the environment.
During Thursday and Friday, the municipality recorded a significant presence of smoke and ash particles, leading to a deterioration in air quality. Health authorities recommend that the population, especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory illnesses, limit outdoor activities until the situation improves. Residents can check the air status at any time through the municipal platform.
