Starting at midnight on Monday, July 13, the A-5 will reduce its capacity towards Madrid between Alcorcón and Navalcarnero. The Ministry of Transport will invest €15.4 million to renew 27 kilometres of road until August 26.

Drivers using the A-5 between Alcorcón and Navalcarnero will face a new lane closure from midnight that will last until August 26. The Ministry of Transport has begun a rehabilitation of the road valued at €15.4 million, the largest investment in this motorway since 2018.

The works will affect the left lane, towards Madrid, between kilometres 24.4 and 23.5. The shoulder, the right lane, and part of the central lane will be occupied, leaving only the left and central lanes operational. The service road remains open as a local alternative.

A Summer of Restrictions in the Southwest Corridor

This main closure is not the only one. Since July 1, there have been mobile night closures between kilometres 10 and 36.7, from Monday to Friday, which will continue until August 31. Additionally, since July 6, there has been a restriction on the right lane, towards Badajoz, between kilometres 13.4 and 14.2, which will maintain a single lane until August 7.

As a consequence, the entry ramp from the link at kilometre 13 towards the motorway in the direction of Badajoz has been closed. The official detour goes via Avenida San Martín de Valdeiglesias to the M-50 southbound. The DGT recommends exercising extreme caution and following the provisional signage, which may vary due to unforeseen circumstances.

The €15.4 million budget is the largest investment in the A-5 since 2018, but it is not the only work this summer that will strain mobility in the southwest corridor.

For residents of Alcorcón, Móstoles, and Navalcarnero, the morning and evening peak hours will be the most complicated. Leaving early and opting for the M-50 or the R-5 (toll road) can save more than one headache. The Ministry hopes that, starting August 27, traffic will return to normal on the 27 renewed kilometres.

€860 Million on Roads Since 2018 in the Community of Madrid

This action is part of the conservation plan for the State Road Network, which has mobilised €860.48 million in the Community of Madrid since June 2018. This is in addition to the recent authorisation from the Council of Ministers to tender another €60.76 million for the A-4 and A-2.

The works on the A-5, although inconvenient, aim to provide a safer and more durable surface for the winter. Drivers in the metropolitan southwest will need to be patient over the next six weeks. As a consolation, the Ministry assures that the schedule is designed to minimise inconvenience as much as possible.

On August 27, if all goes as planned, the 27 kilometres of the A-5 between Alcorcón and Navalcarnero will feature renewed asphalt. Until then, it is better to plan the route with some margin and, if possible, telework or use public transport. The M-50 and R-5 will appreciate the detour.
