Móstoles unveils one of the world's most advanced eye surgery platforms

Móstoles University Hospital has incorporated a cutting-edge ophthalmic surgery platform, featuring multiple lasers and vitrectomy at 30,000 cuts per minute. It is one of the first public centres in Spain to have this technology.

Móstoles University Hospital, part of the Community of Madrid, has added a state-of-the-art surgical platform for eye surgery to its Ophthalmology Service. This places the hospital among the first public hospitals in Spain to have technology that enables more precise and less invasive interventions.

The equipment is designed to treat conditions such as retinal detachments, vitreous haemorrhages, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, or cataracts. According to hospital sources, the new technology enhances eye stability during surgery, facilitates smaller incisions, and incorporates an innovative laser and a high-speed vitrectomy probe.

One of the most notable advancements is the probe capable of achieving 30,000 cuts per minute, far exceeding standard levels. This speed allows for work very close to the retina with greater control and precision, reducing the risk of unintentional damage to such a delicate structure.

The platform also includes a real-time monitoring system for the fluid entering and exiting the eye, automatically adjusting flows to maintain stable intraocular pressure throughout the procedure. Additionally, its LED lighting allows for the adjustment of different colour profiles to highlight specific structures and improve visibility of the surgical field.

Another advantage is the use of the smallest calibre instruments available for vitreoretinal surgery. This reduces surgical trauma, decreases inflammation, and, in many cases, eliminates the need for sutures, speeding up patient recovery.

The new integrated laser can simultaneously apply 1, 2, or 4 impacts, shortening the duration of procedures. It is particularly useful in retinal panphotocoagulation, used in diabetic patients, and in the treatment of retinal tears. By multiplying shots with each activation, surgery is completed in less time.

Finally, the equipment allows for cataract and retinal surgery to be performed in the same surgical act, something that previously required two different setups. This integration streamlines complex interventions and improves efficiency in cases affecting multiple structures of the eye at once.

With this addition, patients from Móstoles and the rest of the Community of Madrid attending this public hospital will benefit from a less aggressive technique and a more comfortable recovery. The centre will continue to expand its service portfolio with the latest innovations in the ophthalmological field.
