Móstoles University Hospital has incorporated one of the most advanced platforms in the world for ocular surgery, featuring a laser with 30,000 cuts per minute and real-time monitoring.

Móstoles University Hospital has added one of the most innovative surgical platforms in the world for ocular surgery to its Ophthalmology Service, becoming one of the first public centres in Spain to have it. The equipment, now operational, allows for interventions such as retinal detachments, vitreous haemorrhages, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and cataracts with greater precision and less invasiveness.

The new technology enhances eye stability during operations and facilitates smaller incisions. It incorporates a new type of laser and an innovative probe that optimise surgical times, resulting in safer procedures and a quicker, more comfortable recovery for patients.

One of its most notable advancements is the real-time monitoring of the volume of fluid entering and exiting the eye. The system automatically adjusts both flows to maintain stable intraocular pressure throughout the procedure, a key factor in avoiding complications.

The platform includes a vitrectomy probe capable of achieving 30,000 cuts per minute, well above standard levels. This technique, which removes the vitreous humour, allows for interventions close to the retina with greater control and precision, reducing the risk of unintentional damage to such a delicate structure.

The integrated LED lighting system allows for the adjustment of different chromatic profiles to highlight specific structures and facilitate the differentiation of retinal tissues. This improves the visualization of the surgical field and reduces the risk of damage from prolonged exposure to light during the operation.

Furthermore, the smallest available instruments for vitreoretinal surgery can be used, minimising incisions, reducing inflammation, and promoting a more comfortable postoperative recovery. In many cases, stitches are not necessary.

The equipment features an innovative laser capable of simultaneously delivering 1, 2, or 4 impacts, which shortens the duration of procedures. It is particularly useful in interventions such as retinal panphotocoagulation, used in patients with diabetes, and in treatments for retinal tears.

Finally, the platform integrates the technologies necessary to perform cataract and retina surgery in the same surgical act within a single device. Until now, specialists needed two different pieces of equipment to combine both techniques, which streamlines interventions and improves efficiency in complex cases.

With this addition, the public hospital in Móstoles strengthens its portfolio of ophthalmological services and positions itself at the technological forefront in the Community of Madrid. Patients in the southern region directly benefit from this improvement, which avoids referrals to other centres.
