The City Council of Fuenlabrada has extended the 'Cuidamos la Escuela' programme to most public schools, changing the cleaning staff's hours so they work in the mornings and integrate into school life.

The City Council of Fuenlabrada has taken a further step in its commitment to school coexistence with the extension of the 'Cuidamos la Escuela' programme to most public schools in the city. The initiative, promoted by the Department of Education, aims to improve the maintenance of the centres while involving the entire educational community in the care of common spaces.

The key to the project, as explained by the Councillor for Education, Ana Pérez, is the change in the cleaning staff's hours, who now work in the mornings instead of just in the afternoons. This way, the cleaning team interacts with the students and teachers, making their work visible and valued.

“This is a pioneering programme that does not focus solely on cleaning but has a very important educational and coexistence component,” highlights Pérez. The presence of cleaning staff during school hours allows classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas to be cleaned while they are in use, turning this task into a direct educational tool.

The goal is for children to become aware of the care of shared spaces, participate in the order and cleanliness of the centre, and develop skills in coexistence and respect. Families, teachers, and students thus engage in a project that goes beyond mere hygiene.

The programme was launched two years ago in some centres and, following positive results, has now been expanded this term to most public schools in Fuenlabrada. The plan is for it to reach all public early childhood and primary education centres in the locality next academic year.

Both the cleaning staff and the rest of the educational community recognise the benefits of the initiative, which improves the condition of the spaces and fosters coexistence in the centres. Moreover, the measure dignifies an essential job that is now seen as part of the educational process.
