The Town Hall of Tres Cantos urges the intensification of protective measures due to the worsening air quality from the smoke of wildfires in Ávila and the Sierra Oeste.

The Town Hall of Tres Cantos has urged residents to take extra precautions due to the continuous deterioration of air quality in the municipality, which has recently recorded very unfavourable levels due to smoke from active wildfires in Ávila and the Sierra Oeste of the Community of Madrid.

The concentration of suspended particles (PM10) has reached an index of 137, according to real-time data from the Air Quality Network of the Community of Madrid, placing air quality in the very unfavourable category. Additionally, tropospheric ozone (O₃) presents an unfavourable level with an index of 149, while nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) remains at optimal levels (index 31).

The mayor, Jesús Moreno, has indicated that the City Council is closely monitoring the evolution of the situation to provide citizens with updated information and recommendations from the competent authorities. “Prevention and citizen collaboration are essential to minimise potential health effects, especially among the most vulnerable,” he stated.

Health authorities recommend that the population, as much as possible, stay indoors with windows closed. Outdoor sports, walking, or any other activities outside are discouraged. If it is necessary to go out, wearing a mask is advised, especially for those with respiratory or cardiac conditions, children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Regarding domestic air conditioning systems, it is recommended to use internal air recirculation to prevent the entry of outside particles. It is also suggested to minimise the time pets spend outside.

Tres Cantos is part of the Northwest Urban Agglomeration, one of the areas most affected by this episode of air pollution, which has been exacerbated by the intrusion of air masses of African origin. The evolution of the situation will depend on weather conditions and the behaviour of the wildfires, which continue to generate a significant amount of smoke.

The Community of Madrid has activated Situation 3 of the Special Civil Protection Emergency Plan for Wildfires (INFOMA) throughout the region, due to the advance of the fire in several municipalities of the Sierra Oeste.

The Town Hall of Tres Cantos has established continuous information channels through its official media and reminds residents that they can check updated air quality data on the Community of Madrid portal. In case of any emergency, contact the Emergency Centre at 112.

Authorities insist that citizen collaboration is key to avoiding unnecessary risks and protecting everyone's health, especially the most vulnerable groups. It is recommended to follow the instructions of emergency services and stay informed through official sources.
