The City Council of Getafe has made the pavilion of the Getafe Air Base (ACAR) available to the Government of Spain to house hundreds of residents evacuated from Robledo de Chavela due to severe wildfires.
The ACAR sports hall in Getafe has become an emergency reception centre since this morning for the hundreds of residents of Robledo de Chavela who have had to leave their homes due to the advancing flames. The Getafe City Council is collaborating with the central government to assist the displaced, who are already being provided with food and basic assistance.
The mayor, Sara Hernández, has confirmed that the City Council has been in constant contact with the Government Delegation and the ACAR officials since early morning to coordinate the operation. "We have been in contact with the Government Delegation and the ACAR since this morning to coordinate actions," the mayor stated in comments recorded by the City Council.
In addition to the ACAR pavilion, the municipal government had prepared the La Alhóndiga-Sector III sports hall as an alternative, in case it became necessary to expand the reception capacity due to the evolution of the fire.
Several Civil Protection units from Getafe have also been deployed to the affected areas to collaborate with emergency services and provide support to the population. The City Council has wanted to express its support for the professionals fighting the fire and for the thousands of people who have had to leave their homes without knowing when they will be able to return or in what condition they will find them.
Hernández has emphasised Getafe's solidarity in times of crisis: "What is happening is terrible, and Getafe, as a city that has always been supportive, can only help these people in such difficult times." The mayor is hopeful that the evolution of the fire will improve the situation in the coming hours: "Hopefully, good news will come for everyone."
The fire, which is affecting the western area of the Community of Madrid, has forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in Robledo de Chavela and other nearby municipalities. Extinguishing teams continue to work to halt the advance of the fire, while evacuees receive care at the ACAR, where they are offered a safe space and immediate assistance.
The City Council of Getafe has set up an information phone line for the families of the evacuees and has asked residents who wish to help to contact the municipal social services to channel assistance in an orderly manner.
