Ecologists in Action from AlcoSanse has filed a lawsuit to annul the classification of Los Carriles-Valgrande as developable land. The organisation aims to halt a project for 8,600 homes and has launched a funding campaign to cover legal costs.
The organisation Ecologists in Action from AlcoSanse has taken a new step in its fight against the urban development of Los Carriles-Valgrande in Alcobendas. The group has filed a lawsuit with the Administrative Court of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) to request the annulment of the planning that classifies this area as developable land. The initiative, as explained by sources from the organisation, aims to “definitively end” the project to build 8,600 homes in the area.
The spokesperson for Ecologists in Action, Ainara Elorza, has pointed out that there are “serious possibilities” that the lawsuit will succeed. Elorza recalls that a year ago the Supreme Court already overturned the partial plan for the new neighbourhood after detecting the lack of an adequate environmental assessment. Specifically, the high court annulled the plan for not having evaluated the impact of an artificial mountain 22 metres high located next to Monte de Valdelatas. According to the organisation, that structure has been retained in the new plan approved by the Alcobendas City Council, which they consider a deficiency that must be rectified.
The lawsuit filed, consisting of 133 pages, represents a significant technical and legal effort, according to Elorza. The document is supported by a wide range of documentary and expert evidence, as well as scientific reports that certify the richness and biodiversity of the land. Additionally, deficiencies in the processing of the project and shortcomings in the environmental assessment are highlighted.
To cover the costs of the legal process, Ecologists in Action has activated a second crowdfunding campaign. The first allowed them to tackle the initial phase of the procedure, but now they need resources to cover legal fees and expert work required for the lawsuit during its processing. The environmental organisation insists that the Los Carriles-Valgrande project would have a serious impact on the natural environment of Monte de Valdelatas and the biodiversity of the area. Residents of Alcobendas and San Sebastián de los Reyes have shown their support for the cause, which seeks to preserve a space of high ecological value. The future of the urban plan now rests with the TSJM, which must rule on the lawsuit.
The fight against the urbanisation of Los Carriles has become a symbol of environmental defence in the Community of Madrid. Ecologists in Action hopes that justice will once again be on their side and definitively halt a project they consider unsustainable. In the meantime, the organisation continues to raise funds to sustain the litigation.
