The head of Samur-Civil Protection, Paloma Miravet, inaugurates the San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and the Virgen de la Paloma festivities with a proclamation that praises community solidarity.
The head of the Organisation Unit of Samur-Civil Protection, Paloma Miravet, was responsible for kicking off the San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and Virgen de la Paloma 2026 festivities. The proclamation, held this Tuesday in the Centro district, served to advocate for the role of Madrid's neighbourhoods as spaces for coexistence and mutual support.
During her speech, Miravet, a nurse with nearly three decades of experience traversing the capital in an emergency ambulance, delivered a clear message: “Madrid never asks where you come from, it only asks if you need something”. She added: “After all these years, I can only come to one conclusion: Madrid has an immense heart”.
The speaker wanted to highlight everyday solidarity and shared a personal experience with an elderly person who had an accident at home to emphasise that “no emergency service can replace a good neighbour”. A memory that served to exalt the figure of those who care for others in their daily lives.
The councillor of the Centro district, Carlos Segura, justified the choice of Miravet as a “well-deserved recognition” for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. Segura highlighted that August is the month when Centro “beats in a special way” and shows “the most traditional soul of Madrid”.
Miravet also wanted to thank the work of neighbourhood associations, traders, social entities and municipal services that make these festivities possible. She had a special mention for the professionals and volunteers of Samur-Civil Protection who remain on duty during the celebrations.
The speaker encouraged everyone to enjoy the festivities with respect and to keep the most traditional customs alive, such as the street organs, Manila shawls, or lemonade in the streets of La Latina. After the proclamation, the General Vara de Rey square hosted the traditional election of traditional characters and performances by Raya Real and DJ Mario PG.
The San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and Virgen de la Paloma festivities will last for several weeks with a wide programme of cultural and community activities in the heart of the capital. Neighbours and visitors will be able to enjoy concerts, street parties and traditional events in the different neighbourhoods of the Centro district.
