The SAMUR nurse Paloma Miravet has inaugurated the San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma festivities with a speech focused on community solidarity and neighbourhood spirit.
Paloma Miravet, head of the SAMUR-Civil Protection Organisation Unit, was responsible for kicking off the 2026 San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma Festivities. The speech, delivered this afternoon in the Centro district, highlighted community solidarity and the role of neighbourhoods as spaces for coexistence and mutual support.
With nearly three decades of professional experience driving an ambulance around Madrid, Miravet has championed the city's ability to welcome newcomers: "Madrid never asks where you come from, it only asks if you need something. After all these years, I can only come to one conclusion: Madrid has an immense heart".
The councillor for Centro, Carlos Segura, emphasised that the choice of the speaker represents "a well-deserved recognition for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others", embodying values such as dedication, solidarity, and public service that define the spirit of these popular festivities.
A story of neighbourliness and recognition of collective work
One of the most emotional moments of the speech was the account of an intervention at the home of an elderly person who suffered a fall and was assisted by their neighbours. Miravet stressed that "we can alleviate physical pain, we can save lives, but if there is something that no emergency service can replace, it is a good neighbour".
The speaker expressed gratitude for the work of neighbourhood associations, merchants, social entities, and municipal services that make the celebration possible, and had a special mention for the professionals and volunteers of SAMUR-Civil Protection who will remain on duty during the festive days.
Miravet encouraged both Madrilenians and visitors to enjoy the festivities with respect and coexistence, inviting everyone to share the street, music, and neighbourhood life. She also highlighted traditional customs such as street organs, shawls, lemonade, and the aroma of basil in the streets of La Latina.
The festivities will transform the streets of the Centro district into a stage for cultural, musical, and community activities over the coming weeks. According to Carlos Segura, "August is the month when the Centro district beats in a special way and shows the most traditional soul of Madrid".
After the speech, the General Vara de Rey square hosted the traditional election of traditional characters and performances by Raya Real and DJ Mario PG, while The Zona Rock Band and DJ Kactux performed on Ribera de Curtidores street. The celebrations will extend throughout August at various locations in the district.
