The Community of Madrid will allocate nearly 2 million euros by 2029 to install the region's first publicly-owned quantum computer at the Polytechnic University, serving universities, hospitals, and startups.
The Community of Madrid has announced an investment of nearly 2 million euros by 2029 to acquire the region's first publicly-owned quantum computer. The equipment will be installed at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and will be available to other universities, research centres, hospitals, and companies, especially tech startups.
The initiative is part of the Community of Madrid University Region programme, promoted by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and aims to strengthen the capacity for experimentation and validation of quantum algorithms. It also seeks to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors to promote new technological solutions.
According to the regional government, this computer will enable the development and testing of quantum algorithms applied to the public sector, consolidating Madrid as an international benchmark in emerging technologies. The initiative aligns with the National Quantum Technologies Strategy 2025/30.
The equipment will contribute to the growth of the innovative business fabric and the generation of knowledge in a highly strategic value area. Additionally, it will facilitate the incorporation of this technology into new public services in areas such as healthcare, energy, logistics, or cybersecurity.
For the residents of the Community of Madrid, this investment represents a step towards modernising public services, with potential applications in healthcare management or the optimisation of energy networks. The computer will be operational in the coming years, once its installation and commissioning at the Polytechnic University are completed.
