The City Council of Madrid will reduce traffic to two lanes in each direction on Alcalá street between Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá from Friday, July 17, due to renovation works. Mayor Almeida is confident that the work will finish ahead of schedule.

The City Council of Madrid has announced that from Friday, July 17, the number of traffic lanes in each direction will be reduced to two on the stretch of Alcalá street between Cibeles square and Puerta de Alcalá. This measure responds to the progress of the renovation works being carried out in this area, one of the most emblematic in the capital.

The mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, explained that the acceleration of the works necessitates temporarily closing one of the three available lanes in each direction. However, he noted that the new pace of execution could allow the work to be completed earlier than initially planned. The City Council has chosen the second half of July and the month of August to carry out this phase, considering that the impact will be less during the holiday period when traffic in the centre significantly decreases.

Recovery in September and control of 'tuk tuks'

Almeida is confident that traffic will regain its usual capacity in September, with the reopening of all lanes between Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá, once the works that require occupying part of the roadway are completed. Drivers passing through the area should anticipate possible delays over the coming weeks, especially during peak hours, although the City Council expects the impact to be limited due to the summer season.

In parallel, the mayor has announced that the City Council plans to strengthen control over tourist vehicles known as 'tuk tuks' after the summer. The municipal government continues to resolve the legal issues related to this regulation and is confident that the Governing Board can approve an instruction during September. The aim is to provide municipal services with the necessary regulatory tools to act against the irregular activities of these vehicles, which are proliferating in the centre of the capital.

Technical study at the Cibeles fountain

Regarding the Cibeles fountain, Almeida indicated that the works are progressing according to the established schedule. He clarified that the current intervention does not involve a restoration of the monument, but rather a technical study aimed at determining its conservation status and the possible actions that will need to be carried out later. While these works are underway, the City Council has installed a banner reproducing the image of the goddess Cibeles to reduce the visual impact of the works on one of the most representative monuments in the capital.

For residents and visitors to Madrid, the recommendation is to plan alternative routes over the next few weeks, such as the Paseo del Prado or Serrano street, to avoid the affected stretch. The City Council reminds that detours will be signposted and that the lane reduction will remain in place until the end of August, aiming to have the road fully operational in September.
