The Governing Council has approved two contracts worth €13.2 million to replace 163 kilometres of track and acquire spare parts for trains. The works will be carried out at night without affecting service.

The Community of Madrid has approved an investment of €13.2 million to renew 163 kilometres of Metro track and strengthen the maintenance of its train fleet. The Governing Council greenlit the two contracts this Wednesday, aiming to ensure the optimal condition of one of the largest metro networks in Europe.

The first contract, valued at over €10 million, includes the purchase of 9,050 rail bars of 18 metres, equivalent to 162.9 kilometres of track. These elements will be used to replace the most worn sections due to intense rail traffic, as reported by the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure.

Night renewal without affecting passengers

The replacement work will be carried out during the night, when the metro is closed to the public. In this way, it will not affect either circulation or the transport of passengers, assure sources from the regional government. This renewal is part of the preventive maintenance that Metro continuously develops to anticipate daily wear and tear.

The track is an essential component of railway infrastructure: it supports the continuous passage of trains, ensures their guidance, and contributes to safety, stability, and comfort. Its periodic replacement is essential to maintain reliability standards and extend the lifespan of the facilities. The Madrid Metro network currently has 294 kilometres of double track, distributed across its twelve lines and the branch between Ópera and Príncipe Pío, as well as nearly 19 kilometres of single track in connecting tunnels and another 119 in depots and garages.

Exclusive spare parts for trains

This initiative is complemented by an investment of €3.2 million to ensure the maintenance of rolling stock, with the supply of exclusive spare parts for the trains. The execution period is 15 months, during which original components will be available to ensure the reliability, availability, and safety of the fleet.

With both initiatives, the regional government continues to develop the conservation of Metro's infrastructure and rolling stock to provide safe, modern, and high-quality public transport to the over 715 million passengers who use the metro each year.

“These investments are key to maintaining the excellence of a service used by millions of Madrilenians daily,” sources from the Ministry of Transport have stated.

For the residents of the Community of Madrid, this renewal translates into fewer incidents and greater comfort on their daily journeys. The night works ensure that there are no disruptions or delays, so users will hardly notice the improvements until they experience smoother circulation. In the coming weeks, work will begin on the lines with the most wear, although Metro has not specified which will be the first.
