The Town Hall of Torrejón de Ardoz has disseminated a series of recommendations to avoid the effects of intense heat, especially among the elderly, children, and the sick. The initiative comes during a heatwave that is affecting the Community of Madrid.

The thermometer shows no mercy in Torrejón de Ardoz. With temperatures exceeding 38 degrees, the Town Hall has launched a prevention campaign with 12 key tips to avoid the dreaded heat strokes. The most vulnerable population —people over 65, those with chronic illnesses, and children under four— is the main focus of the municipal warning.

Hydration and timing: the keys to coping with the heatwave

The first commandment is clear: drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration can strike without warning, especially on the hottest days. The Town Hall recommends avoiding alcoholic or sugary drinks, which instead of hydrating, accelerate fluid loss.

Another fundamental guideline is not to expose oneself to the sun between 12:00 and 18:00. During this time, ultraviolet rays are more harmful and the risk of sunstroke skyrockets. For those who cannot avoid going out, the Town Hall suggests seeking shade, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and applying sunscreen generously.

Clothing also plays a crucial role. Natural fibres and light colours help keep the body cool. Footwear should be comfortable and breathable, and at home, it is advisable to lower the blinds during the sunniest hours to create a cooler environment.

Special attention to the elderly and those living alone

One of the groups that most concerns the Town Hall is the elderly living alone. The council recommends that family members or neighbours contact them at least twice a day to ensure they are well. If an elderly person feels dizzy, weak, or unwell, they should seek help immediately and go to their health centre or call 112.

For the rest of the population, the recipe is simple: light meals based on vegetables and fruits, avoid alcohol, and reduce physical activity. If exercising, it is better to do so early in the morning or at dusk, and always with breaks in the shade.

The Town Hall reminds that air-conditioned spaces are allies against the heat. Libraries, shopping centres, or municipal offices can be a refuge for those without air conditioning at home.

The heatwave shows no mercy: what to do in case of a heat stroke

Symptoms of a heat stroke include red, hot, and dry skin, intense headache, nausea, and confusion. At any sign, action must be taken quickly: move the person to a cool place, loosen their clothing, apply damp cloths, and call 112 if they do not improve within a few minutes.

The Town Hall of Torrejón de Ardoz insists that prevention is the best tool. With temperatures nearing 40 degrees in the Community of Madrid, following these guidelines can make the difference between a bearable summer and a hospital scare.

For more information, residents can consult the municipal website or visit their health centre. The emergency number 112 is operational 24 hours a day for any heat-related emergencies.
