Pinto Local Police will carry out preventive alcohol and drug checks from today until Sunday, July 19, at various points in the city as part of the special DGT campaign.

The Pinto City Council, through its Local Police, has joined the national campaign of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) to monitor alcohol and drug levels among drivers. The checks will start this Monday, July 13, and will continue until Sunday, the 19th, with operations at various locations in the city at any time of day or night.

The Councillor for Security, Fernando González, has emphasised the importance of these campaigns in urban areas: “It is in the city environment where our residents carry out their daily lives and where they can become victims of accidents.” González has been adamant in stating that “the only safe alcohol level to prevent an accident is 0.0%.”

Fines of up to €1,000 and loss of points

The Pinto Local Police reminds that driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit can result in a financial penalty of up to €1,000 and the loss of between 4 and 6 driving licence points. If the level exceeds 0.60 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, the case is considered a crime against road safety, with penalties that may include imprisonment.

In the case of drugs, the penalty can also reach €1,000 and the loss of 6 points, regardless of the amount detected. The presence of any narcotic substance in the body while driving is prohibited.

Alcohol present in one third of fatal accidents

According to DGT data, alcohol is a contributing or triggering factor in one in three fatal road accidents. Its consumption, depending on the level, multiplies the risk of having an accident by between 2 and 15 times. In urban areas, where speed is lower but the density of pedestrians and vehicles is higher, the consequences can be equally severe.

For the residents of Pinto, these checks will mean a more visible police presence in the coming days. The City Council recommends planning journeys and, if alcohol or drugs have been consumed, opting for public transport, a taxi, or a ride-sharing service. The campaign coincides with summer festivities and outdoor gatherings, times when short trips traditionally increase.

The initiative is part of the DGT's strategy to reduce road traffic accidents, which saw a rise in alcohol-related incidents in the Community of Madrid in 2025. Pinto, with a population close to 55,000 inhabitants, is not immune to this reality, and the council is committed to prevention as a key tool.

What to do if stopped at a checkpoint?

The Local Police remind that drivers must undergo mandatory alcohol and drug detection tests. Refusing to take the test constitutes a serious disobedience offence, punishable by imprisonment for six months to one year and the withdrawal of the driving licence for one to four years. The most sensible thing, they insist, is to cooperate and, above all, not to have consumed anything.

The operation will remain active until Sunday, July 19, with variable schedules and locations to maximise its effectiveness. Councillor González has called for the responsibility of all drivers: “A few minutes of prevention can save lives.”
