Mayor Judith Piquet has visited the works on the square on Nuestra Señora de Belén street, which provides access to the Santos Niños school, as part of the Alcalá improves its neighbourhoods plan. The project has a budget of 190,000 euros and a timeframe of three months.
The Mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, accompanied by the Councillor for Urban Planning, Cristina Alcañiz, supervised the renovation works of the square located on Nuestra Señora de Belén street in District II this Wednesday. The works, which have just begun, are part of the Alcalá improves its neighbourhoods plan and represent an investment of 190,000 euros.
The project includes a complete renewal of the square's paving, covering an area of 735 square metres. Additionally, the lighting and urban furniture will be replaced, and the aesthetic configuration of the space will be redesigned. According to the Alcalá de Henares City Council, the aim is to improve mobility, safety, and pedestrian accessibility around the Santos Niños school.
One of the most significant changes will be the removal of the mound that currently houses the central lighting. With the leveling of the street and square, existing protrusions and unevenness will disappear, including that of the post box. This measure aims to facilitate pedestrian transit, especially for students and families visiting the educational centre.
In the peripheral areas, the project retains the existing trees but expands the flowerbeds with a circular design. New shrubs will also be planted, and planters will be created on the western edge to visually differentiate the square from the street. The current furniture will be removed and replaced with wooden benches placed around the trees and planters, in order to soften the appearance of the public space.
The lighting will also be completely renewed. The central light point will be removed, and four new spotlights will be installed at the corners of the square, aligned with the trees. This arrangement aims to better distribute light and create a more welcoming atmosphere at night.
Mayor Judith Piquet has highlighted that the Alcalá de Henares City Council continues to invest in District II as part of the neighbourhood improvement plan. “In addition to the investment in the adjacent square, whose works were recently completed, this year we have opened to the public the parking lot with 350 spaces,” she recalled. She also mentioned other actions in the Reyes Católicos area, such as the 1.7 million euros invested in the renovation of Núñez de Guzmán street, where works have already begun, and improvements in the commercial galleries of Santa Teresa and Reyes II, where the paving has been renewed.
The works have a three-month execution period, so the square is expected to be fully renovated before the start of the next school year. Neighbours in the area and the educational community of the Santos Niños school will benefit from a more accessible, safe, and aesthetically renewed space.
