The Community of Madrid has organised a leisure programme for those affected by forest fires, featuring theatre, circus, and music shows at the reception points in Alcalá de Henares, Alcobendas, Móstoles, Las Rozas, Leganés, and Villamanta.
Families evacuated due to the forest fires ravaging the region will be able to enjoy a wide cultural and leisure programme at the reception centres set up by the Community of Madrid starting this weekend. The initiative, which began this Saturday, includes children's theatre, circus acts, and concerts in six Madrid municipalities.
In Alcalá de Henares and Móstoles, the group Ni colorín ni colorado will present an updated version of four classic tales: Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, and The Ugly Duckling. The performances will take place at 11:00 at the Polideportivo Espartales in Alcalá and at 17:00 at the Polideportivo Paco Sedano in Móstoles. The play, created by the performers themselves, offers a contemporary take on these traditional stories.
Meanwhile, Leganés and Villamanta will host circus shows. At the Polideportivo La Cantera in Leganés, at 11:00, and at the municipal pavilion on Barrio Nuevo street, 9 in Villamanta, at 18:30, three professional artists will showcase disciplines such as juggling and other skills, combining technique and fun. After the performance, they will conduct a circus initiation workshop for children and adults to learn in a playful manner. Additionally, stilt walkers will roam the venue creating balloon figures, and a face painter will be available before and after the show.
For their part, Alcobendas and Las Rozas will be the stage for a concert by the duo Váray-Sorozábal, who will perform Echos of Two Lands, a fusion of Hungarian and Spanish music. The event is scheduled for 11:00 at the Polideportivo José Caballero in Alcobendas and at 18:00 at the Centro Deportivo La Marazuela in Las Rozas.
The Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports has coordinated these activities to provide a respite for families who have had to leave their homes due to the advancing flames. The forest fires, which began earlier this week, have forced the evacuation of several localities and keep the region on alert. The reception points have become reference centres for those affected, where they receive temporary accommodation and basic assistance.
The cultural programme aims to alleviate the stress of the little ones and foster an atmosphere of normality amid the emergency. According to sources from the regional government, this is a complementary measure to humanitarian aid, with the goal of “bringing a bit of joy and entertainment to those going through a difficult situation.”
Residents of the affected municipalities have positively evaluated the initiative. “The children are scared and bored; this helps them to distract themselves,” commented a mother at the Móstoles sports centre. The activities will continue over the coming days, depending on the evolution of the fires and the needs of the evacuees.
