The Daniela Kaiser pavilion in the Valle de las Cañas sports city, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, has become the temporary home for 38 evacuees from Cenicientos since last Saturday, due to the fires affecting the western sierra of the Community of Madrid. Mayor Paloma Tejero visited the families this Tuesday to learn about their situation firsthand and to thank the emergency services for their efforts.
Tejero had already supervised preparations on Friday alongside the Municipal and National Police, the Pozuelo Emergency Services (SEAPA), Civil Protection, and municipal workers. Initially, the facilities were prepared to accommodate up to a hundred elderly people from a residence in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, who ultimately were able to remain in their municipality.
During the visit, the mayor spoke with several of the evacuees, who expressed their gratitude for the treatment and assistance received since their arrival. Particularly noteworthy was the case of the ten minors accommodated, who have been integrated into the municipal summer camps in Valle de las Cañas. The City Council has also installed a television and provided games for their entertainment, which their parents have greatly appreciated.
The mayor highlighted the solidarity of individuals and businesses such as Hipercor in Pozuelo and Secoe, as well as institutions like the Army, Puerta de Hierro Hospital, Red Cross, and the City Council of Boadilla del Monte. She also thanked the Cristo Rey residence for offering additional accommodation and for the constant coordination with the Cenicientos council.
Anonymously, residents have donated pet food — among the evacuees are two dogs and a cat — clothing for the elderly, and diapers for the youngest children. The mayor expressed her gratitude to those who have offered help through social media, although she emphasized that there are currently sufficient resources to support the 38 affected individuals.
The Mobile Citizen Attention Office of the Community of Madrid has visited the pavilion both on Monday and Tuesday to offer psychological assistance to those who wish, just as it is doing in other reception points across the region.
