The Arganda del Rey City Council allows bars to install televisions on their terraces during the football World Cup. The measure, approved by municipal decree, starts this Friday with the quarter-final match of Spain.

Bars in Arganda del Rey will be able to install screens on their terraces to follow the football World Cup. The City Council has signed a municipal decree that authorises the placement of audiovisual equipment on outdoor tables throughout the championship, which begins this Friday, July 10, with the quarter-final match of Spain against Belgium.

The measure, promoted by Mayor Alberto Escribano, aims to support the local hospitality sector and foster a football atmosphere in the streets of the municipality. Interested establishments must comply with current regulations, have an operating licence, and not exceed noise pollution limits.

Requirements for hospitality businesses

The municipal decree requires that establishments ensure the safety of people and property, as well as the cleanliness of public spaces. Furthermore, the Local Police may suspend the permit if neighbourhood disturbances or security issues arise. Hospitality businesses that meet the requirements will be able to show the matches on their terraces without needing additional procedures.

The authorisation will remain in effect until the end of the 2026 World Cup. If Spain wins against Belgium, they would play the semi-finals on Tuesday, July 14, against France, and the grand final would be on Sunday, July 19. This will allow bars to plan ahead for broadcasting the matches.

Local angle: a boost for hospitality

For the residents of Arganda, this measure represents an opportunity to enjoy football outdoors without having to travel to other towns. Bars in the centre and neighbourhoods will be able to attract more customers, especially on match nights. Mayor Escribano has encouraged hospitality businesses to join in: “These days we are focusing on leisure and hospitality in Arganda, and we must be more united than ever with the national team to achieve our second star as we did in the Euro 2024 or the Women’s World Cup 2023.”

The initiative also aims to energise the social life of the municipality, which experienced a similar atmosphere during the Euro 2024. On that occasion, several bars installed screens on their terraces without specific regulation, which led to some noise complaints. Now, the decree establishes a clear framework to avoid conflicts.

Precautions and control

The City Council reminds that the authorisation does not exempt compliance with municipal ordinances. Hospitality businesses must respect closing times and permitted noise levels. The Local Police will conduct inspections to ensure that no disturbances occur. The decree warns that the permit may be revoked immediately if neighbourhood disturbances or security risks are detected.

For fans, the measure offers an alternative to crowded indoor venues. Terraces provide a more ventilated space with greater distance, something many appreciate positively. Additionally, the good weather forecast for the coming days invites enjoyment of football outdoors.

The decision by Arganda adds to those of other municipalities in the Community of Madrid that have relaxed their regulations during major sporting events. In towns like Alcalá de Henares or Torrejón de Ardoz, similar measures have also been authorised in previous occasions. The Arganda City Council hopes that the initiative will boost consumption in bars and strengthen the sense of community around the Spanish national team.
