The captain of the Spanish national team, Rodrigo Hernández "Rodri", born in Villanueva de la Cañada and trained in the youth categories of Rayo Majadahonda, became the star of the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday night. Spain defeated Argentina 2-1 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford (New Jersey) in front of 82,500 spectators, and Rodri lifted the trophy as the undisputed leader of the team.
The president of Rayo Majadahonda, Enrique Vedia, was present at the stadium thanks to the 25 tickets and trips that the RFEF raffled among clubs from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd RFEF. Vedia, visibly emotional, stated: "It is an immense pride to see a boy who started here at 10 years old lift the World Cup. He is an example that grassroots work pays off."
"Be brave in life": Rodri's message
In the post-match interview with RTVE, Rodri explained the key to success: "The message was to go for the game, we had to be brave in life, and in the end, God rewards you." The midfielder, who overcame a serious injury in 2024, highlighted the resilience of the group: "We have been able to beat an Argentina that has all my respect, with the best player of all time."
The match was a Spanish monologue. Spain accumulated 20 attacks compared to just one from Argentina, which managed its only goal in an isolated action. Rodri, named the tournament's best player ahead of Messi and Mbappé, was euphoric: "This group has been sensational, we are now two-time World Champions, it's incredible to say that."
West Madrid rallies behind its hero
In Majadahonda and Villanueva de la Cañada, municipalities in the Metropolitan West, the victory was felt with special intensity. Almost all of the 73,000 inhabitants of Majadahonda and the half a million residents of the area followed the final on giant screens and in fan clubs. The mayor of Majadahonda, José Luis Álvarez Ustarroz, announced that the City Council is preparing a tribute to the footballer: "Rodri is an example of overcoming and pride for all the people of Majadahonda. We will welcome him as he deserves."
Rayo Majadahonda, which plays in 1st RFEF, will issue an official statement in the coming days to celebrate the achievement of its most illustrious academy player. The club, which has seen Rodri grow since his childhood, is already preparing a commemorative event at its stadium, the Estadio Cerro del Espino.

Rodri, who in 2024 experienced an injury that kept him off the pitch for several months, assured that his return to the elite is the result of hard work: "I would love for new generations to see that a player who touches the sky and descends to the lowest can rise again with positivity and effort."
The midfielder, who has also won the Champions League and the Premier League with Manchester City, now adds the World Cup to his list of achievements. And he does so, in his words, "because life eventually rewards you."
The celebration will continue in the coming hours with the arrival of the national team in Spain, expected this Tuesday. In Majadahonda, the "Rodri Fans" club is already organizing a caravan to welcome him at the City Hall. The dream of a boy from Villanueva de la Cañada has come true, and all of West Madrid celebrates it as their own.
