The works for the burying of the A-5 enter a new phase: the temporary Batán detour disappears and the road recovers its original layout from July 28. The work will begin on Wednesday, July 22, and will last a week, with night lane closures.
The City Council of Madrid has announced that on July 28, the section of the A-5 that runs over the old Batán link will return to its straight layout, ending the temporary detour that was established last September. The work, which starts this Wednesday, July 22, will eliminate the Batán bypass and improve traffic flow in the area.
The works will take place in the section between kilometres 4.450 and 4.750 of the motorway. To minimize inconvenience, the closures will occur at night, from 23:00 to 6:00, and at least one lane will always be kept open, both for exiting and entering the capital. No total closure of traffic is expected, according to municipal sources.
Goodbye to the temporary curves
The Batán bypass was one of three temporary solutions that the City Council built last year to ensure mobility while the underpasses were demolished and the excavation of the burying tunnels was carried out. The other two detours, at the links of Boadilla and Los Yébenes, are also in the process of elimination. The next to close will be the Yébenes detour, presumably this summer.
With the disappearance of the Batán detour, the A-5 recovers its original straight layout over a section of 350 metres, which will facilitate traffic and eliminate the curves that had been temporarily installed. Residents of the area, especially those from the neighbourhoods of Lucero, Aluche and Las Águilas, will notice a more direct and safer driving experience.
A great green axis over the asphalt
The burying of the A-5, with an investment of over 400 million euros, aims not only to improve mobility but also to transform the space currently occupied by the road into a large green corridor of 3.2 kilometres. This new axis will connect Madrid Río, Casa de Campo, and Cuña Verde de Latina, creating an urban lung for the districts of Latina and Moncloa-Aravaca.
The more than 80,000 vehicles that travel daily on this stretch will be buried, which will reduce the presence of surface traffic by 90% and, with it, atmospheric and noise pollution. The City Council estimates that pollution from road traffic will decrease in the same proportion.
For residents of the neighbourhoods of Lucero, Aluche, and Las Águilas, separated since 1968 by the Campamento motorway and Casa de Campo, the burying will mean the recovery of pedestrian and cyclist connectivity between both sides. They will be able to enjoy a naturalized space that will replace the asphalt, improving their quality of life.
Work schedule and impacts
The works to eliminate the Batán bypass will begin on Wednesday, July 22, and will last until July 28. During these days, land filling and the installation of new surface structures will take place. The night closures will affect one lane alternately, but the motorway will remain operational 24 hours.
The City Council recommends that drivers plan their journeys and, whenever possible, use alternative routes during peak hours. Informative signage will be provided to guide users.
Once this phase is completed, the next milestone will be the closure of the Los Yébenes link, scheduled for this summer. With the elimination of all temporary detours, the final configuration of the burying will be completed, although there will still be urbanization and landscaping work on the surface.
