The Community of Madrid faces the final stretch of the heatwave with yellow warnings, hailstorms, and maximum temperatures still reaching 38 ºC. Alerts will be lifted on Sunday, but summer heat will persist.

The heatwave that has suffocated the Community of Madrid in recent days is beginning to show its last gasps, but not without leaving a weekend of high temperatures, yellow warnings, and the threat of hailstorms. This Friday and Saturday will still be days of intense heat, especially in the Metropolitan, South, Vegas, West areas, and the lower altitudes of the Sierra, where thermometers will continue to register values well above normal.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the region will experience a gradual transition towards more stable weather, but complete relief will not arrive until Sunday, when high-temperature warnings are expected to disappear. However, the atmosphere will still be summery, with high maximums, slight haze, and evolving cloudiness in the Sierra.

Friday: yellow warnings and risk of hailstorms

This Friday, yellow heat warnings remain in place across the Community of Madrid. Temperatures will continue to be significantly high in the Metropolitan, South, Vegas, and West areas, as well as in the lower altitudes of the Sierra. The sky will feature intervals of high cloudiness that will tend to clear by late afternoon, along with medium clouds during the early hours and daytime evolving cloudiness in the central hours.

This evolution may bring occasional thunderstorm showers that, according to AEMET, could be accompanied by hail. Additionally, although the wind will generally be light, strong gusts associated with the storms are not ruled out, so residents of the Sierra and the metropolitan area should stay alert to the sky's evolution during the afternoon. Maximum temperatures will drop compared to the hottest days of the heatwave, but the decrease will be less pronounced in the western part of the region.

Saturday: up to 38 ºC in the Henares corridor and the Vega of Aranjuez

On Saturday, the very warm atmosphere will continue, and warnings for high maximum temperatures will be reactivated. Temperatures will exceed 34 ºC in the Sierra and 36 ºC generally across the rest of the Community of Madrid. The warmest areas will again be in the Henares corridor, the south of the Jarama, and the Vega of Aranjuez, where 38 ºC could be reached. Although we will no longer be at the most extreme peak of the episode, these will still be elevated values typical of an intense heat situation.

For residents of Alcalá de Henares, Torrejón de Ardoz, or Aranjuez, Saturday will be particularly stifling, with maximums that will require heightened precautions, especially during the central hours of the day. AEMET recommends constant hydration, avoiding sun exposure, and not undertaking unnecessary physical exertion.

Sunday: no warnings, but heat and some haze

Sunday will bring a slight improvement. No high-temperature warnings are expected in the Community of Madrid, and maximums will drop slightly. It will be a modest decline, but enough to leave behind the most adverse phase of the heatwave. The sky will show intervals of medium and high clouds, along with daytime evolving cloudiness, more abundant in the Sierra. There, some thunderstorm showers are not ruled out, although it will generally be a more stable day in the rest of the region.

There will also be a slight presence of haze, so the sky may appear whiter or murky. The wind will blow lightly from the south and southeast, increasing somewhat during the second half of the day. The key will be that maximums will no longer reach such extreme values and heat warnings will disappear, but we will continue to experience warm conditions, mild or tropical nights in urban areas, and the possibility of storms in mountainous regions.

In summary, the Community of Madrid will be leaving behind the most intense episode of the heatwave over the weekend, but that does not mean that cool weather is on the way. Residents will still have to cope with the heat, albeit with less intensity, and remain alert to any storms that may form in the coming hours.
