A bus has suffered a dramatic accident in Leganés after losing control at the intersection of Vereda with the Nuestra Señora de Butarque Industrial Estate. A dozen people have sustained minor injuries, two of whom were taken to hospital.

The driver of an urban bus lost control of the vehicle shortly after eight in the morning on the Getafe road, near the Vereda neighbourhood. The bus mounted a traffic island and ended up crashing into a tree, according to reports from SUMMA 112.

The incident occurred when the bus struck the traffic light that regulates the intersection between the Vereda neighbourhood and the Nuestra Señora de Butarque Industrial Estate. After the impact, the vehicle mounted the traffic island separating the M-406 road and continued its trajectory until it collided head-on with a tree, which halted its progress.

A dozen injured, none seriously

The emergency response was activated immediately. Emergency services from SUMMA 112 and the Madrid Community Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene, where they attended to the twelve injured, all of whom were passengers on the bus. Two individuals were taken to hospitals with cervical issues, although without serious injuries, according to initial reports.

Local residents were startled awake by the loud impact. The bus, after destroying the traffic light, mounted the traffic island that separates Vereda from the M-406, and upon descending from it, crashed into the tree.

Testimonies from passengers

According to the accounts of the passengers, 300 metres before the accident, the bus had already tilted to the right. The passengers alerted the driver, who corrected the steering, but shortly after, the vehicle veered again. This coincided with the traffic light at the intersection with Vereda de los Estudiantes.

One of the occupants, after the impact and sensing the strong smell of diesel, attempted to open the emergency door unsuccessfully. Ultimately, he chose to break the emergency window, allowing the other passengers to exit the vehicle.

The emergency services attended to all the injured at the scene. Traffic in the area was affected during the early hours of the morning, although it has since been restored.

The Leganés City Council has announced that it will investigate the causes of the accident, while the bus concession company is cooperating with the authorities to clarify what happened. Residents of the Vereda neighbourhood have expressed their concern about the dangers of the intersection, where other similar incidents have already been recorded.
