The fire, which broke out shortly after eleven at night in an apartment on Nuevo Versalles street, forced the evacuation of three floors of the building. A 42-year-old woman was taken to Fuenlabrada Hospital with light intoxication.
A 42-year-old woman was intoxicated by smoke inhalation in the fire that broke out last night on the fifth floor of Urbanización Nuevo Versalles, 7, in Fuenlabrada. The fire, which started minutes after 23:00 on Sunday, forced the evacuation of the homes on the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors.
A rapidly spreading fire
The alert was received by the Emergency Centre 112 of the Community of Madrid shortly after eleven at night. Residents reported a fire that was spreading rapidly in the apartment. Four units from the Community of Madrid Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene, where they found the fire “very widespread” upon arrival, according to emergency service sources.
The flames affected two rooms and the rest of the apartment was damaged by smoke. The firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent flats, a maneuver that avoided a greater tragedy in the seven-storey building.
Evacuation and re-housing of residents
As a precautionary measure, emergency services ordered the evacuation of the homes on the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors. In total, 25 residents had to leave their homes for several hours. After confirming that there was no structural risk or new hotspots, the firefighters authorized their re-housing.
The owner of the damaged apartment, a 42-year-old woman, was treated by SUMMA 112 at the scene and later transferred to Fuenlabrada Hospital with light smoke inhalation intoxication. Two other residents were also treated by medical staff but were discharged at the scene due to very mild symptoms.
How this incident affects local residents
The fire did not cause serious injuries but has generated alarm among residents of Nuevo Versalles street, a residential area in the Loranca neighbourhood. The swift intervention of the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other homes, something that, according to 112 sources, “could have had much more serious consequences”.
The evacuated residents were able to return to their homes after midnight, once the firefighters certified that there was no risk. However, the affected apartment has become temporarily uninhabitable, and the owner remains under observation in the hospital, although her condition is not serious.
The incident highlights the importance of maintaining fire extinguishers and smoke detectors in homes, especially in multi-storey buildings. In Fuenlabrada, the City Council recommends checking electrical installations and not overloading sockets, one of the most common causes of domestic fires.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is in the hands of the firefighters, although it appears to be a domestic accident. So far, no structural damage has been reported in the building, and the rest of the residents will be able to resume normal life starting this Monday.
