Improvement works at Atocha station require the diversion of Medium-Distance trains from Extremadura and Talavera de la Reina, which will start and end their journey in Leganés from July 17 to 22. Passengers can use their ticket on the C5 Cercanías line to reach Atocha.
Passengers travelling from Extremadura or Talavera de la Reina to Madrid during the upcoming week will need to transfer at Leganés. Adif has announced that, due to the improvement works at Atocha station, Medium-Distance trains will not reach the capital but will stop at Leganés station, where travellers can continue their journey on Cercanías.
Works at Atocha: More Reliability for Cercanías
The works that Adif is carrying out at Atocha station aim to improve the reliability of the Cercanías lines in Madrid. These works, which will last from July 17 to 22, also affect Medium-Distance trains, but not Long-Distance trains, meaning that Alvia Extremadura-Madrid trains will maintain their usual route.
For the residents of Leganés, this measure represents a temporary increase in activity at their station, which will become the starting and ending point for Extremadura trains. Passengers heading to or from Atocha can use their train ticket on the C5 Cercanías line to cover the journey between Leganés and Atocha at no additional cost.
Impacts on Cercanías Lines
In addition to Medium-Distance trains, the works at Atocha also disrupt the service of several Cercanías lines. The C-3 line will start and end its journey at Villaverde Bajo, and travellers will need to transfer to the C-4 line to continue to Atocha and Chamartín. The C-4a line (Parla-Alcobendas/San Sebastián de los Reyes) is suspended between Atocha and Parla, meaning that trains will start and finish at Atocha. Meanwhile, the C-5 line will start and end its journey at Atocha, forcing travellers to transfer at the same station.
Users from the southern area of the Community of Madrid, especially those from Leganés, Fuenlabrada, and Humanes, should be aware of the changes, as the C-5 line, which connects these municipalities to Atocha, will be interrupted. Passengers heading to Humanes or Fuenlabrada will need to transfer at Atocha to continue their journey.
Advice for Travellers
Adif recommends that passengers plan their journeys in advance and check the updated schedules on the Renfe website. For residents in Leganés, the station becomes a key point during this week, with an increase in the influx of travellers from Extremadura. Neighbours using the C-5 line should keep in mind that the trains will only reach Atocha, so if their destination is beyond the capital, they will need to transfer.
The works will conclude on July 22, so from the 23rd onwards, Medium-Distance and Cercanías services will return to normal. In the meantime, patience and foresight will be the best allies for travellers.
