The Fuenlabrada City Council has organised workshops on sign language, responsible use of technology, and co-responsibility in the Fuenlicolonias, with the participation of over 1,500 children aged between 3 and 12 years.
More than 1,500 boys and girls from Fuenlabrada are participating this summer in the training workshops integrated into the Fuenlicolonias, the municipal family reconciliation programme. The activities, promoted by the Youth and Childhood, Social Welfare, and Feminism departments, aim to instil values such as equality, respect, inclusion, and the prevention of tech addictions through play.
The Councillor for Youth and Childhood, Javier González, highlighted that “the Fuenlicolonias are the ideal space to work on educational content in a playful manner.” The workshops complement the usual recreational activities, such as the foam cannon and the visit from the mascot Fuenli, which turn schoolyards into spaces for fun and coexistence.
Since 2021, the Department of Feminism and Diversity has collaborated with the camps by offering a dynamic and participatory activity aimed at primary school groups. About 800 boys and girls reflect on the importance of treating all people with respect, valuing diversity, and preventing discriminatory attitudes, all through games, challenges, and group dynamics.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare has been running a workshop on the responsible use of technology for the past five years, in which 480 children aged between 6 and 12 participate. These sessions address online safety, respect on social media, and the need to maintain healthy habits in the digital environment, with particular attention to the use of mobile phones and tablets.
This year's novelty is the sign language workshop, which has reached 240 children in Early Years and 280 in Primary. The youngest enjoy story interpretation in sign language, while those in Primary learn about the deaf community and basic signs through participatory games. In total, 520 children benefit from this initiative.
The Fuenlicolonias offer more than 3,000 places in various schools across the municipality for children aged 3 to 12, aiming to facilitate family reconciliation during the summer holidays. The workshops take place in the morning and will continue until the end of August.
The Fuenlabrada City Council thus promotes a values-based education that complements children's leisure, combining fun with the learning of social and digital skills. The initiative, according to municipal sources, has been well received by families, who positively value the opportunity for their children to acquire useful knowledge while enjoying the summer.
