The Community of Madrid has celebrated International Grandparents' Day with an intergenerational cooking workshop in Fuenlabrada, attended by around fifty seniors and their grandchildren. The event 'Cooking Between Generations' aimed to strengthen family ties and highlight traditions.
The town of Fuenlabrada hosted an intergenerational cooking workshop on Friday to mark International Grandparents' Day, organised by the Community of Madrid. Around fifty seniors from various public resources in the region participated alongside their grandchildren in the initiative, which took place at the Señorío de Ajuria estate.
The Deputy Minister of Family, Youth and Social Affairs, Pablo Gómez-Tavira, and the Director General of Attention to the Elderly and Dependency, Óscar Álvarez López, attended the experiential event Cooking Between Generations. During his speech, Álvarez emphasised that age should not be a barrier and that it is necessary to break the gap that hinders the projects of older people.
Participants formed teams to jointly prepare cold recipes. The collaborative activity enhanced creativity, communication, and teamwork. Beyond the culinary outcome, the initiative sought to strengthen family ties, recover traditions, transmit values, and enjoy quality time in a close, participatory, and fun environment.
The day concluded with an awards ceremony recognising various aspects of the teams' work. All participants received a diploma as a memento of the experience. Gómez-Tavira highlighted that not only the best dishes were awarded, but also the values and positive attitudes towards life.
The meeting was organised with the collaboration of the entity Serveo. The Señorío de Ajuria estate, located in Fuenlabrada, was the setting for this initiative that focused on intergenerational coexistence.
The Community of Madrid, through the General Directorate of Attention to the Elderly and Dependency, promotes activities that encourage the active participation of older people and their social integration. This workshop is an example of how shared leisure can help break stereotypes and create bonds between grandparents and grandchildren.
For local residents, this activity represents an opportunity to spend quality time with the elderly, recognising their legacy and their role in passing on traditions. The initiative is part of the Community's active aging policies, which aim to improve the quality of life for older people and promote their participation in society.
International Grandparents' Day is commemorated every July 26, a date that reminds us of the importance of grandparents in the family and society. The Community of Madrid wanted to celebrate it with a practical activity that, in addition to being fun, has helped to strengthen ties between generations.
