The 35th edition of the Mus 'Virgen de los Remedios' Championship in Colmenar Viejo will take place from August 3 to 18. The winners will secure a spot for the National Mus Master in Oviedo in November.

The Plaza del Pueblo in Colmenar Viejo will once again be filled with bets and challenges from August 3 to 18 during the 35th edition of the Mus 'Virgen de los Remedios' Championship. The tournament, organised by the Town Hall, opens registrations from July 20 until July 31. The champions will receive a direct pass to the National Mus Master to be held in Oviedo in November.

A championship with tradition and record participation

José María Iturralde, president of the Spanish Mus Association and technical director of the event, highlights that it is one of the longest-running tournaments with the most participants in all of Spain. The average is around 130-150 pairs per edition, a figure he describes as “something extraordinary and beautiful.” “People meet up with others they haven’t seen since the previous year, they have a drink, there are pairs of grandparents and grandchildren playing or couples, where one has taught the other,” explains Iturralde, emphasising the social and intergenerational nature of the event.

The championship consolidates year after year as an unmissable event during the patron saint festivities. The Plaza del Pueblo transforms into a huge card table where community and tradition go hand in hand. For the residents of Colmenar Viejo and nearby municipalities, it is a unique opportunity to enjoy mus outdoors, in a festive and competitive atmosphere.

Star prize: ticket to the National Master in Oviedo

The big novelty of this edition is that the winners will not only take home the local title but will also participate in the National Mus Master to be held in Oviedo next November. A prize that elevates the prestige of the tournament and places it on the national mus map. Iturralde praises the event's consolidation: “It is gaining more and more prestige.”

Although mus originated in Spain, it is also played in the USA, South America, and France, with different variations. In our country, the number of enthusiasts remains enormous: nearly 1,200 tournaments are held each year. Colmenar Viejo thus becomes the epicentre of card games for two weeks, attracting players from all over the Community of Madrid and beyond.

For participants, the championship represents an opportunity to compete with the best, but also to spend a few summer days in a unique setting. Registrations, which are free, can be made at the municipal offices or through the Town Hall's website. The tournament is open to all ages, with categories for veterans and youth, thus promoting generational change.

How to participate and what to expect

Interested parties must register before July 31. Matches will begin each afternoon from 8:00 PM in the Plaza del Pueblo. The game system is knockout, with matches played best of three games. The winners of each round advance to the grand final on August 18.

The Town Hall of Colmenar Viejo has prepared a special setup with tables, chairs, and shade to ensure the comfort of the players. Additionally, there will be a bar service to liven up the evenings. The organisation reminds that the championship is a family activity, so respect and sportsmanship are recommended at all times.

Colmenar Viejo once again demonstrates that mus is not just a card game, but an excuse to gather, compete healthily, and keep traditions alive. And who knows, perhaps a local resident will end up in Oviedo with the national title under their arm.
