The ‘Pablo Ruiz Picasso’ Cultural Centre hosts two free exhibitions from July 2: the vibrant ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ by Jorge Matheus and the serene ‘Nearby Landscapes’ by Juan Pablo Domingo García.

Art arrives this July in Colmenar Viejo with two very different yet equally accessible proposals. The ‘Pablo Ruiz Picasso’ Cultural Centre has opened its doors to ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ and ‘Nearby Landscapes’, two exhibitions that can be visited for free until July 30. The first transports the visitor to the jungle and myths of Brazil; the second invites calm through everyday corners.

A walk through the ancestral Brazil of Jorge Matheus

The Picasso Room is filled with colour through the work of Jorge Matheus, an artist born in Rio de Janeiro who has travelled halfway around the world to settle in Madrid. ‘Brazilian Fantasy’ brings together paintings, illustrations, and engravings featuring jaguars, macaws, and spiritual figures. Matheus aims to show the essence of Brazil beyond tourist clichés, as explained by the cultural centre itself.

The artist trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio and has worked as an illustrator and graphic designer in Buenos Aires, Paris, and Madrid. His style blends traditional and digital techniques, using recycled materials and an approach that oscillates between the realistic and the abstract. This is his first exhibition in Colmenar Viejo, although his work has already been seen in Brazil, Portugal, France, and Spain.

The exhibition invites a visual journey through nature and ancestral spirits. The visitor is the one who completes the meaning of each piece, according to the author's concept.

‘Nearby Landscapes’: the debut of a late-blooming painter

In the foyer of the centre, the proposal is more intimate. ‘Nearby Landscapes’ features sixteen oil and acrylic paintings by Juan Pablo Domingo García, a resident of Colmenar Viejo who graduated in Fine Arts after retiring. His works depict everyday scenes from the closest surroundings, with a touch of fantasy that slightly idealises them.

Domingo García defines himself as a “late-blooming painter” and claims he paints for pleasure, without commercial interest. This is his first exhibition, and the setting could not be more symbolic: the cultural centre of his own municipality. The exhibition conveys serenity and a contemplative gaze towards the familiar.

Both exhibitions offer a stimulating contrast. The chromatic explosion of Brazil against the peace of local landscapes. Two ways of understanding art that coexist under the same roof.

Opening hours and free access

The exhibitions can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 14:00, at the ‘Pablo Ruiz Picasso’ Cultural Centre, located at Calle de la Iglesia, 12. Entry is free and does not require prior reservation. The centre is closed on weekends.

For the residents of Colmenar Viejo and the entire Community of Madrid, it is an opportunity to engage with art without leaving the area or spending a euro. Two artistic worlds that deserve a visit, especially if the heat is on and a cultural plan indoors is appealing.
