The municipal group of Más Madrid Alcobendas presents an institutional declaration for the City Council to support the law that would grant Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born under Spanish administration.

The municipal group of Más Madrid Alcobendas has registered an institutional declaration for the upcoming ordinary Plenary with a clear objective: for the City Council to position itself in favour of the Sahrawi Nationality Bill. This initiative, which is currently being processed in the Congress of Deputies, seeks to recognise the right to Spanish nationality for Sahrawis born under the sovereignty and administration of Spain.

The party believes that the Spanish State has a "historical debt" with this population. With this motion, they aim for local institutions to demand the removal of bureaucratic obstacles and to resolve the legal vulnerability of thousands of people who, they argue, maintain a historical link with the country.

A gesture of solidarity with local roots

The spokesperson for Más Madrid Alcobendas, Mariano Cañas, has highlighted the municipality's history of solidarity with the Sahrawi people. He recalled the involvement of local residents, host families, and the local associative fabric through programmes like Vacaciones en Paz, which brings Sahrawi minors to the city every summer. "That solidarity now deserves a political response," Cañas stated, insisting that institutional commitment must go beyond humanitarian aid.

For the residents of Alcobendas, this is not a distant issue. Many families have hosted Sahrawi children during the summer months, creating bonds that transcend administrative matters. The institutional declaration aims to provide political support for that civic commitment.

A call to the local PP government

Cañas has sent a direct message to the local government of the Partido Popular, reminding them of the institutional meetings scheduled this week between members of the municipal government and representatives of the Sahrawi people. "The voting stance in the Plenary should be consistent with that official agenda," he noted, urging all parties to support the declarative text.

The bill, which seeks to resolve the statelessness of many Sahrawis, has generated debate at the national level. In Alcobendas, Más Madrid's initiative aims for the City Council to join other administrations that have already shown their support. The vote in the Plenary will be a thermometer of local political sensitivity towards a cause that, for many, is a matter of historical justice.

The spokesperson for Más Madrid emphasised that this is not an empty gesture: "Supporting this law is recognising the bond that Spain maintains with Western Sahara and settling a pending debt." The party hopes that the debate in the Plenary will help to highlight the situation and pressure Congress to expedite the processing.

If approved, the institutional declaration would join other similar initiatives in municipalities across Spain. For Alcobendas, it would be another step in its tradition of hospitality and international solidarity. The plenary session will be held in the coming weeks, and it is expected that the topic will generate intense debate among the municipal groups.

Meanwhile, host families and local associations continue to work to keep the flame of solidarity alive. For them, institutional support would be recognition of years of effort and commitment. The ball is now in the court of the councillors, who will have to decide whether Alcobendas will join the list of municipalities supporting the Sahrawi nationality law.
