The Community of Madrid registered 3,908,415 contributors in July, a 3.5% increase compared to a year ago, and unemployment fell to 273,631, the lowest figure for that month since 2008.
The Community of Madrid is once again at the forefront of job creation in Spain. According to Social Security affiliation data released this Tuesday by the central government, the region added 132,261 new contributors in the last year, reaching a total of 3,908,415 registered workers.
This 3.5% increase exceeds the national average by six tenths, which stood at 2.9%. On average, 362 contracts have been signed daily in the region over these twelve months, accounting for 20.6% of all jobs created in the country.
Unemployment also shows a positive balance. The number of unemployed people in Madrid stands at 273,631, after falling by 0.8% year-on-year (2,245 fewer people). This is the lowest figure for a July since 2008 and the twenty-eighth consecutive month below 300,000 unemployed.
Unemployment has decreased among both sexes and in all sectors of activity. The largest declines were recorded in Construction (-10.1%) and Agriculture (-6.4%), followed by Industry (-1.6%) and Services (-0.2%).
In the self-employed sector, the Community of Madrid reaches 445,111 self-employed workers, the second-best figure in the entire historical series. In the last year, 10,304 new self-employed workers have been added, a growth of 2.4%, seven tenths above the national average (1.7%).
For the residents of the region, these figures consolidate a trend of recovery in the labour market that has been ongoing for several years, particularly strong in sectors such as construction and services.
The next affiliation data, corresponding to August, will be published at the end of September and will allow us to see if job creation maintains its pace after the summer.
