The Spanish international, MVP of the last World Cup with the national team, is Mourinho's priority to bolster the midfield, where the absence of a class pivot has been felt over the last two seasons.
For Diomandé, the white club would be willing to pay up to €100 million to Leipzig. The 22-year-old left winger joined the German side last summer from Leganés for €23 million and has exploded in the Bundesliga: 13 goals and nine assists in his first season. His profile fits as a luxury replacement for Vinicius, whose future remains uncertain, and to provide rest for an injured Rodrygo Goes.
The operation comes after Atlético de Madrid rejected a €150 million offer from Real Madrid for Julián Álvarez, as promised by Florentino Pérez during his electoral campaign. The re-elected president kept his word, but the red-and-white club said no. That money has now been redirected to the two targets that the club already had in mind.
Leipzig, as a Red Bull brand club, is traditionally a seller, which would facilitate negotiations. However, Real Madrid is not willing to exceed the €100 million barrier for Diomandé. In Rodri's case, Manchester City knows that the player only has one year left on his contract, which could lower the cost of the operation, although the English club will demand the premium it always imposes on Real Madrid due to their status as a big club.
