Alejandro Navarro wished good luck to the Spanish U16 team, which is training at the José Antonio Paraíso Pavilion until this Wednesday. Local player Sofía Pinillos is part of the team.
The Spanish U16 women's basketball team has been preparing in Torrejón de Ardoz for their participation in the Eurobasket, and on Wednesday they received a visit from the mayor, Alejandro Navarro, who wanted to express his support for the national team before they travel to Calatayud for a friendly tournament.
The team, which has been training since August 1 at the José Antonio Paraíso Pavilion, includes local player Sofía Pinillos, a guard for Movistar Estudiantes' cadet team. The local player has been one of the standout names during a training camp that has turned the city into the headquarters of the national team for almost a week.
During the meeting, Navarro received a signed jersey from the players, a gesture of gratitude from the Spanish Basketball Federation for the use of the municipal facilities. The mayor highlighted that the choice of Torrejón for this preparation “is a testament to the high quality of the sports facilities our city has.”
“Good luck to everyone, and thank you once again to the Spanish Basketball Federation for choosing Torrejón de Ardoz to prepare for a major competition, in this case the U16 Eurobasket,” Navarro stated.
The U16 team will now head to Calatayud, where they will compete in an international friendly tournament on August 7, 8, and 9 against Romania, Poland, and Lithuania. This will be the final test before the Eurobasket, which will take place from August 14 to 22 in Romania. Spain is placed in Group C, with Poland, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic as rivals.
Torrejón de Ardoz holds the title of European City of Sport 2026 this year, and the concentration of the U16 team adds to other top-level sporting events hosted by the municipality. The City Council has taken the opportunity to remind of the planned investments in facilities, with a total of 20 million euros allocated for projects such as the second phase of the Soto Henares Sports City, the expansion of the Joaquín Blume Sports City, or the new Sports City of the Royal Football Federation of Madrid.
Additionally, the mayor announced that next September a new 11-a-side football pitch and two 7-a-side municipal pitches will be inaugurated, as part of the commitment to promote sports among residents. The Spanish U16 women's team will depart for Calatayud on Thursday to continue their preparations, awaiting their continental debut in Romania.
