The Community of Madrid is organising free tours of Alcalá de Henares this August, guided by Cervantes characters such as Dulcinea and La Gitanilla. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturdays 15, 22, and 29.
The Community of Madrid has launched a new edition of its free tourist routes to showcase Alcalá de Henares through the most famous characters of Miguel de Cervantes. The activity, which combines theatre and heritage, will traverse the streets of the city for three consecutive Saturdays in August: the 15th, 22nd, and 29th.
Each day there will be two sessions, at 11:00 and 12:30, lasting 60 minutes. The meeting point will be inside the museum, from where the tour will begin. Spaces are limited and tickets will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis on the same day from 10:30, with a maximum of two per person.
The company Noiz Arte will bring to life figures such as Dulcinea del Toboso, La Gitanilla, or Constanza, who will accompany visitors on a walk through the settings that inspired some of the most universal works of Spanish literature.
The initiative aims to bring the figure of Cervantes and his legacy closer to locals and tourists, taking advantage of the incomparable setting of Alcalá de Henares, a city declared a World Heritage Site. For residents of the Community of Madrid, it offers an opportunity to rediscover this historic enclave at no cost and with a playful and educational approach.
The activity is part of the summer cultural programme of the regional government, which promotes local tourism as a driver of economic dynamism.
Additionally, the museum is hosting the exhibition With Cape and Sword. Fashion in the Time of Cervantes until 30 August, showcasing the various types of clothing from the Golden Age, such as guardainfantes, gorgueras, coletos, jubones, and faltriqueras. The exhibition includes clothing typical of the Court and various social classes and professions, analysing how descriptions of clothing contribute to characterising the figures in Don Quixote and other Cervantes works.
The exhibition is supported by literary and documentary sources from the period, as well as clothing present in Cervantes' works. It also incorporates costumes and figures from historical recreation, opera, and film, offering a comprehensive view of dressing in that period. This approach allows for reflection on which aspects have endured and which are part of the collective imagination associated with the 16th and 17th centuries.
For literature and history lovers, this combination of theatrical tour and exhibition provides a complete cultural plan. The visit can be complemented with a stroll through the Cisnerian University or Cervantes' birthplace, although the organisation recommends arriving early to ensure entry.
The activity is free and does not require prior registration, but given the first-come, first-served distribution system, it is advisable to arrive early. Spaces fill up quickly, as has happened in previous editions.
