The Madrid City Council has announced the official programme for the August festivities, which will once again turn the historic centre into the epicentre of traditional culture. From August 4 to 16, the districts of Centro, Lavapiés, and La Latina will host the San Cayetano, San Lorenzo, and La Virgen de la Paloma festivities, offering a mix of religious events, free concerts, and activities for all audiences.
The kick-off will be on August 4 at 8:00 PM in the General Vara de Rey square, with an opening speech by SAMUR-Civil Protection, recognising their public service. From that moment on, and for almost two weeks, locals and visitors will be able to enjoy a festive atmosphere spread across the squares, streets, and gardens of the historic centre.
Three festivities, three blocks of celebration
The organisation has structured the festivities into three blocks, each dedicated to one of the traditional celebrations. San Cayetano will be celebrated from August 4 to 7 in the General Vara de Rey square, the Ribera de Curtidores, the Cascorro square, and the streets of Oso and Encomienda. San Lorenzo will take over from August 8 to 11, with stages in the Arturo Barea square, Doctor Piga street, Argumosa street, and Olivar street.
The cycle will conclude with La Virgen de la Paloma from August 13 to 16, with activities in the Vistillas gardens, the Paja square, Cava Baja, and Calatrava street. The complete programme, published by the City Council on its website, details the schedules for children's activities, chulapo contests, and popular lemonades that will enliven the historic centre.
Free concerts for all tastes
Live music is one of the main attractions during this time, and all concerts will be free and open access. The musical programme kicks off on August 4 with Raya Real and their repertoire of rumbas and sevillanas, followed on August 6 by Soleá Morente, who will present her flamenco fusion proposal at San Cayetano. During San Lorenzo, the concert by Metroolé on August 10 will be the highlight in the Arturo Barea square.
The final stretch will feature well-known names: Celtas Cortos will perform on August 13, DePol will offer their recital on August 15, and Miss Caffeina will close the programme on August 16 in the Vistillas. According to the official press release, these events will be complemented by DJ sessions and variety shows.
Processions and religious events
The religious dimension of the celebrations maintains its usual solemnity and gathers thousands of devotees each year. The San Cayetano festival will be commemorated on August 7 with a solemn mass followed by a procession through the neighbourhood. On August 10, services will be held in honour of San Lorenzo, with a liturgical ceremony and a procession through Lavapiés.
The main day for La Virgen de la Paloma will be August 15, featuring a floral offering, a solemn mass, and the lowering of the Virgin's painting by the fire brigade, followed by the procession through La Latina. These events attract numerous faithful and curious onlookers who follow the tradition.
