On July 15, 2020, the then-mayor Susana Pérez Quislant announced the creation of the 'Pozuelo 2030' council, an initiative that aimed to emulate the UN's 2030 Agenda but ended up forgotten. Five years later, the city council remembers it as a political anecdote.
Pozuelo de Alarcón is recalling these days the fifth anniversary of the creation of the 'Pozuelo 2030' council, a municipal invention that the then-mayor Susana Pérez Quislant presented during the State of the Municipality Debate on July 15, 2020. The initiative, which aimed to align with the UN's 2030 Agenda, was met with skepticism and ultimately disappeared without a trace.
A marketing whim
The 'Pozuelo 2030' council was born as an attempt to modernise the image of the City Council and connect with global sustainability trends. However, according to municipal sources, Mayor Quislant did not have a deep understanding of the 2030 Agenda or its implications. The initiative was initially managed by councillor Eduardo Oria, who soon distanced himself upon realising the lack of real content in the project.
Subsequently, the council was handed over to Paquito Melgarejo, a councillor from Murcia linked to Teodoro García Egea's 'Murcian Power'. Under his management, the council failed to take off and the name 'Pozuelo 2030' fell into disuse. The logo disappeared and the initiative stopped making headlines.
A legacy of archives
Five years later, the 'Pozuelo 2030' council is remembered more as a curiosity from the archives than as a transformative project. Residents of Pozuelo consulted by this newspaper indicate that the initiative had no impact on their daily lives and that the City Council has continued to function without it. "It was a whim that lasted as long as it lasted," comments a resident of the municipality.
The disappearance of the council has not generated controversy, but it has left a reflection on the use of the 2030 Agenda as an electoral claim. The City Council of Pozuelo, now under another mayor, has not wished to make any statements on the matter.
What remains of Pozuelo 2030?
Currently, there is no trace of the council in the municipal organisational chart. References to 'Pozuelo 2030' have been removed from the City Council's website and official documents. The initiative has become an example of how political trends can be ephemeral at the local level.
For residents, the episode serves as a reminder that not all electoral promises materialise. "Let’s hope the next ideas are more solid," concludes another resident.
